Use a bristle brush to remove particles, brush away from orifices to keep the junk out. Are they of a result of needing the rebuild or is it something else.

I'm rebuilding the engine right now. It's a result of the crank bearings going out. I'm really assembling it all so I'm washing everything off that got debris on it. Should I use any cleaner when I brush the stator off?

I would use normal solvent , just something that is not corrosive or harsh

Yeah you don't want to take any coatings of the windings.
