What is a good sprocket ratio for trail use

    by Wioffroader » Sun Jul 05, 2015 6:19 pm

    Hello,
I am looking for a good sprocket ratio for trail use for my 250r. It is a 14/48 right now. Should I go back to the stock 13/51? Or is there a better setup for the trails? Would like more low end for the trails
    Thanks!

It depends on exactly what kind of trails you will be riding , very tight technical single track ? , semi open single track , open single track , ATV type trails where its flowing and fast , desert trails , i would guess (depending on your skills) a 13/52 to start with , and go from there , you will either like it or not

I can tell you that on my 450X i run 13/52 (stock is 13/51) and i can run the tightest of tight trails , and can still get up to 75 mph , it will run in the desert with this gearing , and be well off , but still crawl in the tight stuff with ease , i also use a HotCams Stage 1 , this cam is made for Bottom to Mid power (it still does ok on top power , but its made for low end power) , this in combo with the gearing will make your bike a trail friendly ride

It will not be the same as a X would , because of the close ratio tranny , the gearing is not only different from the X but the spacing is different , so 1st to 2nd , has more of a gap than a X so getting the right gearing is more of a issue than with a X as the X gaps are closer and the overall gearing is gapped differently , and no you can not put X gears in a R , they will not fit , so the bike might work great in 1st but bog in 2nd if you dont have the gearing set right for the terrain your riding , the key is to figure out what gear you will be in mostly (1st,2nd,3rd,etc) and gear the bike to be optimal in that range you will mostly be riding in

This Calculator may help with your decision , as you can compare the ratios and get a idea what to expect out of it for speed , torque , etc ,

I am currently running 13/52 I think I might go up to a 51. I ride mostly semi open to single track trails and have no issues.
