06 carb trouble. Hot start question.

    by Stang117 » Mon Jun 29, 2015 4:31 pm

Well, this site has helped me so much with the bike I just bought, 2006 crf250r. I am having idle issues with the idle hanging high, and hard to start. I am checking valves tomorrow, and replacing the floating valve plate and seal. I have done a very good cleaning of all jets and the rest of the carb. The only thing is the rubber piece on the hot start where it goes into the carb doesn't go all the way up to the carb. The hot start closes all the way and is clean, so it shouldn't leak air correct? Even without the rubber piece? I'm pretty sure it is the very worn floating valve thing, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks!,

You can test it by shooting some air into the hotstart intake hole (top of carb near slide) and making sure no air comes out of the exhaust hole (top of venturi on engine side). Also make sure the fuel screw is adjusted properly (start at two turns out), the o-ring is in good shape, and you don't have any air boot leaks. Use a can of starting fluid or a propane canister and listen for an RPM change.

Right on, that's where I started, did not have an o ring on the fuel screw, it does now, no boot leaks. I'm pretty much down to the hot start or the floating valve on the slide. I think...

Sounds like you're on the right track. I would replace the seal on the floating valve just to be sure. I believe you can buy just the seal on this website for about $15. Wish I knew that before I spent $70 on OEM

It was another case of floating valve seal gone bad. Idles like a dream. Checked valves while I was there. Exhausts both .009, one intake was .005, the other was .010!! Will that loose of a valve hurt power? I plan on reshimming soon, but I need to ride this weekend, will it last a couple of times out? Thanks.

Oh yeah, the previous owner just did valves, and couldn't get it to idle right after, so I got it super cheap. Looks like he messed up the valves, that's why that one is so far out.
