    Big Problem or Small Problem?

    by lakers1125 » Fri Oct 10, 2014 2:38 am

Hello glad to be on the forum and wonder if someone can help me real quick.

So I am changing valves, take the head off, manual tells me to pull radiator hose without draining it first (caught up not to think about it) so the coolant is draining and i realize on my ignition side the gasket is bad so the coolant was flowing right into my engine while it was draining out of the head. Come to find out coolant is now in my piston as i am moving it up and down finding the real top dead center. i took the drain bolt out and coolant leaked as well as some excess oil.

How bad of a problem do I have or can I just flush this out with oil a couple times and I will be okay? Please let me know, I don't wanna blow this engine up, lol.

I have always flushed the cases with kerosene, or diesel. it sucks up the water. fill the case up shake it around and rinse with fresh oil till it comes out nice and clean. are you just doing head work, or doing the whole top end? as far as whats on top of the piston you could just wipe it out and get some fresh oil in the cyl.

Well I pulled my cyl head off and inspected valves, they are definitely shot because the dude i bought it from said he never did a rebuild and he rode it a lot. I am also checking the piston out and thinking maybe while i have it off i should just replace the piston as well since it probably has over 40 hours or more on it. Not sure, tight on money and already putting SS valves in it so not sure where to go from here lol.

I'm likely in the same boat.
Bought my bike just recently and it's used, and it's rough.
Many hours use and little maintenance if any.
Will likely be trying to freshen her up over the winted (just want a couple more weekends of riding while not freezing temps yet since havent even got a chance to ride it yet).
Not sure if I'll be able to handle changing valves and seats and piston and what not since I've never been that deep in a motor before or if I'll have to source out and pay big bucks for an engine rebuild (which kinda tight for cash too becuase running a superbike in local regional racing).
Keep us posted on your rebuild progress.

Will do! It's not bad to learn on a bike, this is my first bike owning and working on and honestly its simple to tear down just so you dont have to pay a shop to do it, which can cost you that extra money for nothing. I got my bike for a damn good deal so i am debating on putting this and reselling it for a profit. I will keep you guys posted and post some pics of the valves and piston when i can. For some reason when i pulled the cyl head off the piston was stopping about a few cm from the top (the reason i know this is because there wasa carbon ring where it was stopping), but once i pulled the cyl head completely off the piston would go all the way up. is this normal or is it supposed to go all the way up?

If it was stopping a few cm from the top when the head was on believe me you would know it. The timing and detonation would be serious problems. My thought on the ring you see is most engines like to stop in the same spot when they shut off, ESP if they use the kill switch instead of just popping the clutch. Also during your inspection when you said you had the head completely off it went full stroke, is it possible the cam chain was binding somewhere?

I decided to take the safe route and order a new piston and a new timing chain. Hopefully all goes well.

One question about the cylinder.. Should i rehone it or what do i do with it after pulling the piston out? Can i just replace the piston and call it good or does a job need to be done to the cylinder? There are no scratches that I feel in the cylinder and the cross hatches look okay. What do i clean the cylinder with?

Use a Scotch brite pad and oil to clean the surface. 0000 steel wool & oil is good too.

You just want to clean not remove. ;)
