What year is the head ? what year valves do i use? -CRF's Only Forums

Good Morning CRF's Family ... I recently obtained an used head from Ebay for my crf250r. Thing is, i am unsure of the year of the head, and as a result i am also uncertain of the correct valves needed to be purchased.Is there any way to differentiate the year? Thanking you in advance

first, did the head come with the cam caps? if not, the head is useless. many of the CRF250 heads we see on ebay are being sold without the cam caps and these are machined with the head so without them you can not use this head. the only way to identify the head is to post photos of the ports. also, as the head is used it will likely require the seats to be professionally cut. this is only possible if there's enough valve seat material.

it actually came with caps and appears to be in pretty decent conditon ... you seem pretty skeptical about the heads on ebay but everyone does not have the same experience. i will do my best, thanks

yes, i am skeptical. skeptical because many who buy them there end up sending them to CRF's Only or contact CRF's Only for cam caps. if a guide is bad or a seat breaking away you will have to replace them and they have to be replaced in pairs. once you get to that point you start approaching the cost of a new head. unless you soda blast the carbon from the head it's very difficult to see seat damage or seat material breaking away. guides need go-no-go gauges to determine if they are within spec. doubt many, if any, of the fleabay sellers are doing this work to certify the head they are offering won't end up needing these repairs. just sharing what we see on a regular basis from owners and buyers.

It will obviously depend on the age of the head. The older it is and the more use it has had and the type of riding it was used for, will have a large affect of how useable it will be without major work.

Hope you got a good one, Ken was just making you aware that people are only selling them because they are of no use to them.

I assume it does not have valves or other associated valve gear?
