    2008 crf250r wont start!

    by 1krr » Sat Mar 09, 2013 7:10 pm

Hey guys I just purchased a 2008 crf250r from a kid that broke his leg while riding it. It would not start when i purchased it so I got it for a smoking deal. I took it to my local mechanic and told him to do a topend rebuild. I took it home later to find out my stator went bad so I picked up a 2006 crf450r stator locally for cheap. shabang! It fired and ran like a champ for prolly 5 rides.(consisted of prolly 4-5 hours).

I took it home gave it a bath and put it up. the next weekend I went to go for a ride and nothing, it wouldnt start.

I have tried everything. checked the timing spot on, i rebuilt the carburetor changed the plug switched to higher octane fuel.. ive even tried starting fluid... nothing..

Im really starting to get upset with this bike seems like its more trouble than its worth.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Oh and btw I have checked the spark, the plug smells like gas and all i can get it to do is backfire out of the exhaust!

How are you starting it? Choke, 3 Hits of the Gas and Firm Kick? Should Start 2-3 Kicks

yeah im giving it around 3-4 blips of the throttle with choke. then if i feel like i have flooded it i just take choke off and pull in the hotstart and just try kicking it.

Did you try it without the choke? Mine seems to like about 5 blips of throttle, no choke and kick. might not help but worth a try, mine seems to flood if i use the choke.

When you first go to kick it over, try pushing the kickstart down to thebottom slowly. When you bringit back up, let it come all the way back up and slowly start applying pressure to the kickstart until you hear a click. Then try to kick it over.

I have been battling my 08 250r for 40 hours with rough starting. I bought it as a left over in 2010. I found the valve clearances were tight from the factory. Adjusted to spec. still hard to start. Installed dyno jet kit and removed backfire screen in air filter. Still hard to start. Removed carb inspected cleaned and installed mixture screw. Still hard. What the fix for me was Ron hamps decompression mod. Apparently on the 08/09 the put to much duration in the auto decompression cam causing the exhuast valves to stay open at low rpm (kicking). Once I performed the mod. it starts within 3 kicks! I found the my valves stay within clearance for roughly 15 hours but I clean my air filter every other ride. Also when ever I store the bike I drain the fuel and put engine on TDC. Hope this helps cause i was frustrate to the point I almost sold the bike now its great.
