air boot soaked with fuel & oil??

    by mprentice » Sat Dec 01, 2012 7:04 pm

Hey all. Need some advice on my son's bike.

Last night as I removed the air cleaner, I noticed the inside of the intake boot was soaked with a mixture of what seems to be oil & gas. It has the consistency of oil, but the smell of fuel. I immediately thought to pull the plug on that drain tube with the cap on it, attached the the case, and it was full of what seems to be the same stuff.

Went riding today, cleaning up tonight, went to change the air cleaner again and I noticed the same thing. Again, went to drain that tube and it was full again, but more junk came out this time.

What would be causing this? And is it something I should be concerned with? My older CRF's have never had this...any ideas?

At the races today and was able to find another rider with the same model/year. Turns out he had the same issue at about 30 hrs. He replaced the injector and it fixed the issue for him.

I measured the oil before practice, and then after, and I did end up with a higher level of oil. So I suspect that I have a leaky injector dumping fuel, and causing the level to rise, thus increasing the head pressure as you recommended, and causing the condition I described.

Time to order an injector I guess

well big thanks to Ken!! recieved my new injector today and was able to install it. Overall, fairly easy job, but I have to say...this is the first time I've worked on this 2012. All these electrical connectors scare me to death. Miss having a carb right about now...

Since I had the bike apart, and about 38 hours, I opted for a new fuel filter kit as well. I will be tackling that tomorrow.

I will have to report back once I get this thing running again. I sure hope this fixes my original issue.

glad to hear the injector and fuel filter arrived in time. here's a link to a how-to video on replacing the fuel filter (and fuel pump) if necessary in a Honda CRF450R. the process is the same for replacing the fuel filter and fuel pump in a Honda CRF250R. simple job and the video will show you step by step.

Just a quick follow-up to my issue. Finished installing my injector, and had a chance to race this past weekend. Seems to have fixed the issue. No noticable rise in oil level, no blow back found in the airbox or breather tube. I also did the smell test, and no fuel smell as we had before.

So overall, success! Thanks again to Ken for #1 having the part in stock! and #2, getting it to me in just a few days.

To top it off, my son finished second overall in his class for the day!

BTW...pretty easy fix. I did it without a manual and it took me about 2hrs.
