    Top End Ticking

    by hosl380 » Sun Aug 19, 2012 8:26 pm

Pulled over today shut the bike off for a few minutes was running fine, go to start it back up and it was ticking very loudly.

Instantly thought valves but the motor is only around 50 hours if that, its a 2010 cr250f have a new crank and bearings, new rod, 13:5.1 cp piston, and a stage 2 hot cam.

Starts up fine so im not thinking valves, what the heck could it be?

Any help would be appreciated thanks

I just put a new 13.5:1 piston and SS valves in my 250X. Got it all back togather and had a suspicious ticking sound. I discovered that the left intake valve clearance was at zero. I removed the cam and found that one of the valve cotters was not properly seated and was causing the shim to rise, hence the ticking noise. Easy fix but time consuming. Hope this helps.

definitely check the top end stuff first as mentioned. also, sometimes the decomp will make more noise than normal. try lubing the decomp system with oil. apply the oil to all the small working parts (including that little nub that activates the arm) apply a coat of assembly lube to the arm and surfaces if the oil doesn't work.
