Building a CRF250R for XC need help with FI and Carb ?'s

    by j0114 » Thu May 24, 2012 8:59 pm

Okay I been looking into this and decided to get a crf250R or an 01 CR250, so the thing the the crf250R was the year etc.

I had been told by lots of trusted XC riders the 07 CRF was the best way to go b.c u can get it fairly reasonable and they had several reasons besides the eFi.

Okay so i hve recently heard that for Xc your better off with the carb version CRF 04 or 05. The owns a shop guy telling me and has raced XC for prob 20 years, a friend of mine was sponsored by aftermarket places but they provided him with bikes etc, he told me if they cost the same etc go with EFI b.c even if its only a little better now there will be lots of mods that woud mke it lots netter in s years or 2 he suspected.

Okay here is where is gets complex, obviously i m not leaving a MX bike stock to race and ride XC, I have planned before i decided on a year to get an athena 280 kit and piston and cam, as well as a yoshi exhaust, different seat cover, some hand guards with bark buser ends that attach to end of handle bars, Flexx barrs, ims tank, Roll Pegs and get the suspension re done by enduro engineering, the rear shock and forks done by enduro engineering, and there were several carbon fiber parts I wanted a skid nd few other thing an ASV lever.

Oksy i hope ur still with me b,c i found an 07 for $1500 in excellent shape excpt the top end is bad, and us I could just hsve s top end job done but since I sm buying the Athen 280 Kit would thst not solve the problem when it is installed?

I ve got bunch of answers saynin thst the 280 kit would fix it

does anyone know for sure either way, if the athena kit does not fix i what else is needed besides the athena kit is it like a damn gasker or sometjing?

Okay can find nice carb bikes fir 1250-1300 or so all day thats never had a peoblem b/ c sometimes when u have a majo failure u are going to have a lemon , this bike has had engine trouble in like 55-65 hours
opinions please carb or Fi, take the chance on the newer FI bike?

I know how to work on an FCR carb and dont knos crap about FI yet s.
So i been thinking find a nice clean carb bike and have more $ left for mods

    welcome to CRF's Only!

the '07 CRF250R is a FCR carbed motor. EFI was introduced on the CRF250R in 2010.

"top end" means a lot of different things to different people. "top end" comprises the following:

    1. piston
    2. cylinder
    3. head
    4. valves
    5. cam

if all of these are damaged or need replacing the Athena 280 big bore kit will only address the piston and cylinder. so you'd have to find out if it also needs valves and or a new head and cam.

if you watched this years supercross you'd know you are not taking a chance on EFI CRF250R. having said that a well jetted and functioning FCR carb works very well too.

Well dont I feel silly, I thought EFI was done in 07,

So what is different in the 07 than the 04 or 05 or other models for so many people to tell me that was one of the best years for Xc,
Part of it was price range.

Okay, when i go look at the bike what are some things i should check since I cant start it,
I know you can shift through the gears, so it means the trans isnt locked up,
and you can kick it through the cycle- I cant rem what that means but a mechanic friend told me to check that that if you could kick it though the cycle it was a good thing about what was wrong with it,
he said if I couldn't kick it through the cycle to pass on it,

As far as the athena kit, I was going to replace the cam anyways, and I was going to have the head ported, and of course id hope it idnt need valves but, its a chance the valves just need adjusted and wont start.

This is what i know about the bike, he was riding it and something happened and it would not crank after, and a friend told him it was the top end, he hasnt had a mechanic look at it, he said he never rode it anyways and is buying a jeep and needs 1500$ so if id give him the $1500 i could have it

I would think it would be worth $1000 without an engine or at least 800,
Ive saw the bike and its very clean,
My little cousin went to the MMI motorcycle mechanics place and works for a honda, yamaha, polaris, suzuki, kawasaki - sea doo place,
Im taking him with me to look it over,
So I think having him with me wil be big help, but with engines you don know till u get it apart, to really know forsure.

I am not the best mechanic, I come from Quads and I as the racer and had a mechanic. I learned alot from him but ill feel alot better with my cousin with me to look at it,

So you mechanics out there what are some tests I can do to the bike to tell good or bad things,

Also am i better off buying one a few years older in good running condition, I just know alot of times you can find things with a little wrong with them and get a newer bike for alot less, and my interest in it was mainly b/c I planned on doing a good bit of engine work on it to begin with.
I mean if I buy an 05 running perfect im still getting an athena or another 280 kit with new cam, piston, porting, larger valves prob etc anyways.
