    2012 250r exhaust

    by mappsterr » Thu Nov 17, 2011 5:01 pm

I have been reading about the improvements to the 2012 models over the 2011. A couple of the articles I have read say that the quieter exhaust (94 db) really restricts the flow, hurting the power.
I am sure this is true but to what degree? Anybody out there with a 2012 that can attest?
Anybody tried a slip on that they like?

Would like to hear some of your opinions. Thanks.

Bump. Surely some one has a new 2012?

any sound restriction muffler will reduce flow and hence power. the trick is minimizing this effect. that's why you see all kinds of headers now with "cans" attached. those are for reducing sound without affecting performance. the aftermarket exhausts will definitely outperform the stocker. check your sound limits for the racing/riding you do and make sure you'll still be legal with a change.

Based on the performance chart from Yoshimura the RS-4 produces
19.12 max torque compared to 19.11 stock and the max horsepower is 37.16 in comparison to the stock can at 35.74. We have a 2012 and it is very quiet and has power everywhere, I'm just not sure if I'm going to spend $400 bucks for 1.5 hp.

x2, I got a stock 2012 and my friend a stock 2010. I don't feel a loss in power in the high rev but can notice a good difference in the low and mid rpm where the 2012 pull a lot harder than the 2010.

The new cam, porting and TB make up for the loss of the more restrictive muffler.

I'd buy an RS4D in a heartbeat if I could find a used one real cheap but it's not gonna happen. As Daniel said, I won't pay 400$ for 1.5hp when the bike is already really fun to ride.

Thank you taylorrep & JfRacing911. That's just the kind of response I was looking for . . . thinking of buying one and wanted to hear some opinions. And, it's fun to sneak up on someone and pass them on a quiet bike.

    mappsterr,
It truly is so quiet I find myself slowing down all the time to check out where my kid is, he came off of a 150R/B which was noisy as hell in comparison to the 2012 .........ok, truth is I can't ride with my kid but it is really quiet!

My son is riding a KTM 144sx now and wants to go 4 stroke. Plus, I am a Honda man all the way. His riding has improved a lot on the 2 stroke and he is ready for the 250F (he is a tall 15 yr old). I may have to get 2, one for him and me. How old is your son?
What else should I know about the 2012 - I really like it.

Chandler turned 15 on August on the 19th he is 5'10" 145#. I'm not a racer myself I prefer woods, the little bike is everything Honda said it was in the description and performs exactly as advertised. We actually bought it about a month before any of the magazines had a chance to publish their 2012 reviews so I was kind of concerned but for the most part everyone rated it in the top two with Kawasaki's double injected 250F taking top pick by most magazines. The bike corners on a dime, has really good balance, and the power is tracable all the way through the range, in fact we ride the same terrain now as we always have and his 150 R/B had to have a 9 oz. fww to make the clutch more manageable, so far we are not having those issues on the 250. I think the both of you would be more than impressed with the bike and your son will (in my opinion) become a better rider on the four stroke, the power delivery and torque is just so much more predictable.

My son turned 15 in July and is basically the same build as your son. Yeah, I've read the magazine reviews and we have a friend who just bought the 2012 Kawasaki. Everyone who has ridden it says it tracts really well -- just point it and hit the gas. Just can't go green - Ha,ha.
Thanks for the great information Daniel.

My buddy just got one for his son who races out here on the east coast and he went with the FMF 4.1 which really opened it up nicely. The exhaust was one of the main flaws with the bike but once corrected that thing will keep right up with the Kawi/Suzuki. You can also throw a high comp. piston in it and polishing/porting will put you right with the front of the pack. The bike is a sleeping beast. Suspension is greatly improved so just make adjustments and then possible get the FI mappings tuned and you will have no issues and the bike will be race ready.

I don't often see those floating around. Most people I know hang on to their stock in case the aftermarket breaks. You're better off buying an FMF or something. I've seen the 4.1 with header for under $500 although I can't say its for a 2012 but definitely 2011 and prior on Ebay. I would have negotiated that in the original deal with the salesman. They can either throw it ontop of the finance loan.
