    valve shim diameter??

    by rigoscrf » Fri Feb 08, 2008 8:15 pm

Is there a differnce between intake and exhaust shim diameters? The Honda parts finder shows different reference numbers on the fische (16 and 17). I measured with a "cheap" digital caliper and they both seem to be at 7.46mm. I don't plan on using OEM shims but, am just curious if there is an actual difference. Also, I just installed the faction intake kit and the exhaust shims seem to fit fine.
    Thanks

They are the same. The 250 thumpers of all brands use the same size shim 7.48 intake/exhaust , same with the 450's except they are 9.48's. Doug

The stock titanium valves looked fine and clearance was okay. I just upgraded/downgraded to the steel intake valves as preventative maintenance. The seats and guides look good. I purchased the bike as a basket case; due to exhaust rocker arm failure and am slowly bringing it back to life.

Thanks for the heads up. I do realize that I am going by visual only and no I am not a CRF specialist. However, I have been a Honda auto tech. for about seventeen years and am willing to give it a try as is. I lapped all valves and they look good. I don't think the bike has had to much use on it but, did notice an engraving on the cylinder head that read SL40. I am not sure what it stands for but am "guessing" that it had some recent work to it. Anyways, tearing it back down is not too big a deal.
