Just installed my Rekluse clutch...it broke my clutch cover!

    by BWalker508D » Fri Jun 15, 2007 12:03 am

I have just installed a Rekluse clutch on my '04 CRF250R a few days ago. I used the supplied gasket and the stock clutch cover. After a quick test ride I noticed a small amount of oil on the bottom of the clutch cover where it meets the case. I tightened the bolts a little more on the bottom, but deffinately not overtight. I took it out to work on it more today, and noticed my clutch cover is cracked! I took off the cover and noticed it looks like the clutch hit the cover on the inside. Ill post some pics when I get a chance so you folks can see what I mean. I was just wondering if you guys had ever seen this or had any issues. I am totally shocked. Guess Ill have to spring for that Rekluse cover afterall...

    That's strange.

You said you utilized the supplied (thicker) 'kluse gasket?

Is there any chance it was already cracked and the install just magnified the problem?

I've had no issues with my clutch cover and Rekluse after 6+ months.

Give the boys at Rekluse a call. There very helpful.

    Good luck!

i'm with brad. with the supplied gasket there are no clearance issues with the z-start and the stock clutch cover. as long as that was installed the z-start wouldn't be to blame unless there was some other install issue. the value of the rekluse cover is increased strength, oil capacity, and the elimination of the thick spacer gasket that comes with the z-start. it's an excellent investment.

On my 2006 CRF250X, the Z-Start Pro required a bit more reduction of a casting flange than indicated in the instructions (I have no idea if that is required for the R). I discovered that after looking at the extended wear pattern on the inside of the cover. Another observation (possibly relating to your situation) is the fact that the thicker gasket can allow you to easily put too much strain on that pathetically weak clutch cover. If you didn't use a torque wrench and went with what 'feels right', that could certainly explain it. I wish mine would break, then I could justify another purchase to W.
