QUESTION bike blowing white smoke not head gasket bad rings?

    by rider1121 » Wed May 23, 2007 5:59 pm

My bike started shooting out white smoke from the exhaust. This means it must be from the coolant. I changed the head gasket and that was unfortunately not the problem. I heard it would have bad rings, bad piston, or need a hole new top end. Anyone know what could possible be the easiest way to check or fix the problem? Thanks a lot

Are you losing oil at a rapid rate, does the bike seem to have a lot less compression? poor performance? anything else? did you wash the bike and shot a gallon or two of water down the pipe? dump it in a stream crossing?

First of all, welcome. A little introduction might be nice to get some background info. Let's take step back and figure out when or how it happened.
Was there an event that "triggered" this?

--You say its blowing out white smoke from the exhaust. Does it do it from the second it's started or does it have to warm up?
--The white smoke: When you hold your hand in front of the exhaust outlet while its blowing the white smoke, does the exhaust smell sweet on your hand?
--If it is coolant, there are only a couple places it could come from. Bad piston/rings won't give you a coolant leak by themselves. Have you done a compression test? If so, did you remove the radiator cap and watch for bubbles?
--You mentioned replacing the head gasket. Did you check the head and cylinder surfaces for flatness?

    Please advise.

The oils are find it's not from then we changed all of them completely. The compression is normal, it starts up normal when it's cold. It's fine when you choke it, but when you start to give it throttle, it starts to smoke and then continues even while it's idling and after it has been turned off. I still have to check the smell of the exhaust but it does smell different from last when I started it. I'm trying not to run it too long in case it is something bad. I have not performed a compression test but when you kick it the compression is strong. When the head gasket was replaced there was no noticable marks or curves in the cylinder, but did not specifically look for them. A local dealer said it could possibly be the plug if it's has a green color on it. It started smoking like this after I changed the brake pads and bled the brakes. Before that it was fine, but was a good month ago and was the last time it was run before last week when I noticed the smoke. I don't think anything triggered it, I was just cruising and after about 5 minutes I smelled something and it started to smoke. Again, this was after it was sitting for about 5 weeks. I just want to know if I can see what's wrong and fix it myself or pay a lot to get it fixed. Thanks for the replies.

Sounds like you may need to do a leak down test. you will most likely have to bring it to you dealer or shop for that.
You aren't running any additives in your fuel are you? or av-gas or anything funny right?

This one's gonna hurt. Bike needs 4 new valves, piston, springs in the engine, possible new polished cylinder head. The crankcase is clicking - touching metal. Pretty much a complete engine rebuild. This is the point where I wish I had a 2 stroke so it doesn't cost 1500. Not sure if I'm gonna do it myself or not. I might try to sell it as is. Thanks for all the replies.

Although the polishing is unnecessary, this is normal for a 4-yr old 250F.

What does that mean? The crankcase is metal. Do you mean crankshaft connecting rod?

Did you go to a dealer?
