04 CRF230 Pilot Jets

Hi I'm new to the forums and have an 04 CRF230F I purchased used in 06. Recently I installed a Kouba extended fuel screw to easier adjust the fuel screw. The bike was running poorly and popped when idling down. I also removed and overhauled the carb. The engine idles rough until 2 1/2 turns out then idles very smooth and at the highest speed around 3 1/2 turns but never seems to fall off when turned out. At 3 1/2 turns out the screw feels loose and Kouba says the screw will fall out if it is left any more than 2 1/2 turns out. They suggested replacing the pilot jet. My needle clip was set at stock position 3 and I moved the clip to position 4 (richer) thinking this might help, it didn't. Heres my question, since I bought the bike used I have no idea what pilot jet is in the carb or what jet I need. The silencer has been removed from the pipe and this is the only mod that has been done that I know of. Also what position should I set the clip at? Thanks!

Welcome to the site.

My wife has a 2005 CRF 230 F and the engine is set up as follows:

#8 Sparkplug
Power Up Kit:
Pilot Jet: #45
Main Jet: #115 (I think stock is a 102)
Needle Setting: 4th Clip from the top
CRF's Fuel Screw: 2.0 Turns out
Snorkel Removed
No Toil Air Filter
Baffle removed.

She runs mostly from about 5,000 ft. elevation up to around 7,000 ft. but have also ran down around 1,000 ft. with no problems.

Since you had the carb off, you might also check to make sure that the manifolds are seated properly to ensure that there are no air leaks.

Hope this helps.......
