2009 CRF250R Pain In My Backside

    by BAH » Sun Apr 28, 2013 9:04 pm

Ok looking for some help here.
I have a 09 crf250r. The motor has been completely rebuilt from the bottom up. I have added a few upgrades.
    280 BigBore Kit
Webb cam... Don't remember what one it was. Specs Mid to top.
    Carb has all new parts.
    Also ported and polished.
    etc etc

When I 1st got it together I put a JD kit in it. I had nothing but problems. I put in a 188 main, 42 pilot and moved the clip from 4 to 3rd trying to get it right.

I gave up on the JD kit and pulled it.
went to stock needle, 3rd clip, 188 main and 45 pilot.
    Air screw around 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 out.

The bike screams most of the time. The problem I'm having is if I stall it or if it flames out it will take for ever to start. If I have the bike on a stand and kick it boom second kick it will fire.. Kill it on stand and kick again boom fires. Get it up to temp and stall it you can kick for 15 min before it will fire. Now when I get tired of kicking you can push it, click it in to second and boom will fire.

Raced it Saturday. Checked valves, timing etc after practice. All was good.

Stalled on a hill due to traffic and I kicked for 10 min before it fired.

I'm at a total loss. I'm starting to think its not a jetting issue. Almost wondering if it is the stator. Was thinking maybe after the bike gets hot the stator is hot and has a weak spark. Might be dumb but when you push it the motor gets more revolutions than just kicking it there for more of a chance to fire.

    Anyway any thoughts would help.

check the floating valve seal and plate and make sure they are installed correctly and the seal is new.

if you have not replaced the spark plug do this as well.

it could be an electrical issue but at least verify these two.

Here is a list of what I've replaced in carb. I will pull the floating valve seal and check it. The jetting is something that I'm just not real familiar with.

Don't know if this will make sense or not.
But when the bike is just at idle and you kill it, it will fire right back up. So what takes place in the carb that is different than just being killed at idle VS the bike stalling from being lugged it to high of a gear at low speed etc. . Does the carb load with fuel?

    Just at a loss.

    And thanks for the help!!!

Are you using the Hot Start when trying to start it :?:

Yes I try the hot start. Things I do.

Stalls, Turn gas off hold throttle wide open and kick a bunch of times. Turn gas back on and kick.

    Stalls, kick, kick, kick, kick

    Stalls, Kick with hot start.

    Stalls, kick no hot start.

Stalls, turn gas off kick bunch of times, pull choke, kick

    Stalls, pull choke and kick

Stalls, get mad and dump it on ground and walk to truck

Push it with gas on, no choke, no hot start and most times it will fire.

Most times it takes maybe 5 to 15 min before it will start by kicking.

When you try to start it Hot, you are keeping your hand off the gas, pulling the hot start, and Kick firm?

Try 2 Step leaner Main. I had that Problem, this Worked for me.

Yes I've gone as far as holding on to my bark buster when kicking . I normally will kick slow I feel the compression then kick it .

Pulled the plug this morning. Looks rich to me. Don't laugh at my spark plug socket! Could find mine!

I think Ill drop down to a 180 and run it there and see what I get.

We had similar issues on our 09 250r. Sent the carb to Tokyo Mods and perfect, just turn the gas on and kick. We have found that they set the float very high so you don't touch the gas! We run Sunoco 112 and it does great hot or cold.

Put a 180 main in it tonight. Rode it around got it nice and hot. Killed it and started kicking. Gave up after 5 min. Went back out after I cool down and fired right up. I'm so lost

Wondering with all the mods if the 93 pump gas is part of the problem.

Ours will not run off pump gas! Also our float level is so high that if you lean the bike over slightly gas runs out the overflow. I wish I could tell you what Tokyo done but I didn't go in to it,but it stopped the bog on hard landings and helped tons with start up. No throttle just turn gas on and one kick sometimes two. I have seen my son go down and go to neutral and pull the hot start but no problems!
