    06 Carb Tuning Questions

    by Snoco1 » Sun May 27, 2012 2:27 pm

Ok, so a little back ground
    06 crf purchased used.
    Valves in spec
    Jets (JD Jets I believe)
    Slow Jet 40
    Main Jet 165
    Starter Jet 68
Pilot screw turned 1 3/4 out
Spark pulg is not the stock one, no idea why the plug is different. Bought a stock plug and bike runs worse on it. Plug is dark, looks to be rich, but according to the service manual it should be lean with the jetting.
    No AP mod
    Boyesen AP Cover
    Carbon Carb Heat guard

Tossing this out there in advance, this is my first experience with carbs, I am clueless, just trying to learn along the way.

I cleaned and replaced an o ring in the carb
Put it back together and it kicked over withing a couple kicks, better than ever. Once ran for a while I adjusted the idle using the throttle stop screw. Ran great.

Went to start the bike this morning and nothing. Wouldn't start kicking it. So I backed out the throttle stop screw and the bike wanted to kick over but would not stay running. So I decided why not try the hot start (I know it wasn't hot) but it kicked right over and idled correctly. Let go of the hot start and the bike dies.

Tried adjusting the pilot screw and not much changed. Might have been harder to start with it turned in more, but not 100% sure.

Once the bike was warmed up the bike would start first second kick.

I let the bike sit for a few hours and ended up having to use the same start proces using the hot start.

So my question is what does that all mean? I know it's just a tuning issue just don't know where to start, the shop I bought it from new nothing about the bike other than it ran great when they had it, big surprise.

I also wonder if it's a newer 07 carb because looking at the service manual for my bike it says that in 07 there was a slow air jet in the carb after 07 which my bike has.

This bike rips when running, just want to figure out this small issue.

    Thanks in advance.

whenever you are having starting issues it's always a good idea to check your valve clearances. make sure they are in spec. if so, make sure you are getting spark. if both the valves and spark are good then look to the carb. make sure you know which needle you have (JD or some other needle), make sure you know which jets are installed. if the bike set with fuel in the carb it's a good idea to just replace the jets. do these and report back on the results.

I left that part out I guess.

I tore into the bike/carb because of starting problems. I checked everything. The first part to my post I stated valves are in spec. Made sure getting spark and fuel. I purchased new jets non jd jets only a main and pilot jet. Need to order the new starter jet though the shop didn't have one.

So after I put it back together I am at the point where I posted my topic, much better than before. Before I could never ever get it started cold from a kickstart, always had to push it. But now I can get it kick started.

So I have done everything you said to do before posting the topic except replacing the starter jet only because the shop didn't have one, it'll be on its way soon. I did clean the jet with a carb tool (kinda of a little wire file thing I borrowed from a buddy and cab cleaner). No carb cleaner used in the carb only on the jets when I had them out.

I hope that clarifies my posted topic.

Thanks for the quick reply, figured it'd be days before I heard back on a holiday weekend. Hahaha.

It's also good to list exactly what bike model you are dealing with. I assume it's an X since you made reference to the starter button.

Sorry, it's a crf250r. I new what I was talking about in my head, why didn't you. Haha.

I don't think I referenced a starter button. If I did I meant the starter jet.

Choke is on when starting cold.

I have let the bike sit and tried cold starts a few different ways:

I have tried it a few times with only the choke and it kicks over within 1-3 kicks. Idols very slow for about 30seconds to a minute then dies.

Choke on, hot start pushed starts within 1-3 kicks and idols at correct rpms as if only using the choke on a correctly running bike. As soon as I let of the hot start the bike idols down and dies.

I have also tried to start it cold not using the choke and push the hot start and it starts also, but dies as soon as I let off the hot start.

Looking at the bike late last night I noticed the TPS (throttle position sensor) had slightly rotated. (need locktite on torx bolt holding it) Not sure if that would change anything since I really don't know what it does.
