2003 CRF230F Power up kit, HELP please

    by Richd1963 » Wed Mar 21, 2012 7:32 pm

Got the kit, Pulled snorkel off air box, installed Moose air-filter, Installed the 45 Pilot and 135 Main. Also opted for the T handle air screw. Set the new needle with the clip in the 4th position and ran the air mixture screw out to about 1 1/2 turns out. She Idles OK, upon opening the throttle she bogs a bit. I am wondering what the little brass thing is that came in the same bag as the needle and clip. I am not sure where to put it........ Easy now! Oh, I put on a Pro Circuit T4 exhaust pipe and muffler too. 2000 ft elevation, CA weather
It would have been nice if they would have included some installation instructions with the kit. The air screw was the only thing that came with instructions? I am going to get some fresh fuel tomorrow and hopefully by then I will have some better idea as to what that round brass insert is and where it goes. Hopefully it will help her run better. It appears that the air-screw doesn't really seem to change the idle when I adjust it. Any thoughts?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

the needle clip should be in the middle clip position. when installing the fuel screw make sure you have the o-ring, washer and spring installed in the correct order. you can go up to 2 to 2 1/2 turns out on the fuel screw to adjust the bog if any exists.

Thanks Ken, Yeah, I was sure to get it all back together in the correct order. I was reading all the threads here in the forum and all the advice was suggesting the clip in the 4th position. I will yank her out and re position clip this afternoon.

I would go back to a 132 for the main as well.

the 132 and 135 mains are there for tuning depending on other mods and altitude. so, it never hurts to try them both to see which offers the best performance.

    Thanks for all the suggestions!
I just got some fresh fuel to start with. Heading out now to remove carb and make changes....

I am still curious as to what that brass bushing thing is that came in the same baggy as the new power up needle and c clip? Can anyone tell me what it is for. The nipple like bushing?

Figured it out. It is the seat for the needle on the slide. I took out the factory one and installed it just in case. I fired it up and she breathes like a dragon!!!

Nice guys, thanks for all the help.

It is the standard part but Honda assumes you are replacing a needle due to wear so you will need it.

You all have been helpful. Thank you for the tips and suggestions. This bike is running so good, I am going to start going through the other two CRF's. I have my wifes 230 to power up and my Daughters 150. I am going to look into just putting together the components I need and just purchase them only. Since I bought the 150 used, I need to tear into the carb and see where we are at. I have a pretty good assortment of jets both pilot and main, but as far as the main jet needle, I just have the one that came out of the CRF230 which has the 5 slots for adjustment. I used the power up needle that came in the kit, it had a different taper to it and since I paid for it.
The other 230 and 150 I am talking about have stock exhausts and air cleaners. I have read more threads and am aware of the intake and exhaust changes needed to be made to allow for increased airflow.
BTW, CRF's only has the best shipping for me here in CA. The stuff gets to my door about the same time I "click" checkout, LOL thanks Guys..................... :D
