    CRF150F, cold starting........

by Ed Schilling » Sat Sep 24, 2011 9:59 am

Hi guys, I just traded the wife's CRF230F on a 2004 150F for her to use in the woods. Her 230 was a little big and she has a CREF230L with a tag that fits her better. We also have a 100F for the daughter. Last woods trip she rode the 100 and liked it so I got the 150 for her. Much better for her than the 230 or 100 in the tight trails....almost perfect for her in the woods.

The bike is hard to start cold.....needs full choke for a couple kicks, then 1/2 for a couple and then it'll fire but must idle a minute or two before she'll take throttle. After it's hot it runs just fine and starts right up. It seems in very good shape, engine quiet, compression good, blah, blah, blah....

My question is, is the idle mixture adjustable...I see what looks like a spring blocking the hole where I would assume it to be.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Gi Gi the "Ting Ting"...Gas Gas EC 300 (tagged! :)

    Helen's "Thumper" CRF230 L (tagged!)

CRF 150F, Helen's "trail bike" (un-named at this point)

    Sidney's "YamaDog"...1983 DT100 2 stroke (tagged!)

    Sid's CRF100F (un-named)

And last but certainly not least.....
"The Bunny"....1997 CR 250R, waiting on a new heart, she had a fatal heart attack this summer after 25 miles in 100 degree heat...but she got me back to the parking lot before she died. She was and will be "bad to the bone" (again soon).

welcome to CRF's Only! assuming everything is in proper running order it's likely your jetting. these are jetted lean from the factory and cold bikes like a richer mixture to start (hence the choke). you can check the jetting database in the 150F section or just install our PowerUp Jet kit. you should also replace the fuel screw with an adjustable one so you can fine tune the pilot circuit...this will also aid in starting.

    again, welcome!

Thanks Ken. Am I to understand that the stock fuel screw is not adjustable? I have looked at your jetting kit and let's just say "it's on the list" ;) I'm glad to hear that my cold starting "worries" are probably "normal" for the model. The other CRF's don't really need the choke and that is why I was concerned. The old 230F had been re-jetted, the 230L is "new" and the 100 needs just a little choke (first click). The 150 runs very good once warm.

I rode the thing through the woods today at stupid speed...then went back and did the same loop on the "Ting Ting". I gotta say that the CRF was every bit as much fun and probably as fast through the tight woods! Pretty amazing considering the differences in performance levels between the two!

Thanks again, Ken for the reply!

the stock fuel screw is adjustable. however, you will need a tool to do it. the t-handle fuel screw we offer allows you to adjust it by hand and when the bike is running.

sounds like you had a great ride today!

I just bought a 150 also. I found the best way to start it is turn it over once in full choke and then switch to half choke and once it turns over i just barely tap the throttle (play with it) until i can get it to rev up to some higher rpms, then drop it in 1st and haul rear. :)
