    Stuck Pilot Screw 2007 CRF450x

by YOLO Racing » Sun Jan 30, 2011 2:34 pm

Bought a used 2007 450x. The pilot screw is stuck and I cant turn it either way. It appears the previous owner had trouble with it as it looks like pliers have worked it over...Ive tried to loosen but am afraid ill snap it
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That's a tough spot... Pull the carb off the bike and flip her up side down where you can work on it. Use some penetrating oil [FreeAll -great stuff]. Soak it for a day. Tap or wiggle the jet everythime you add a little oil.
If that does not free it - go for it. If it snaps, drill it out, run a tap down through to clean it up. If it does break free from the oil, retap the threads to clean them up.
You got a tough one there. Worse case is forcing it busts the carb boss that holds the jet. Probably not but it is possible. I have had main jets stuck and done the above to free them. Good luck & report back.

Hey - one more thought. If you have micro torch, you might CAREFULLY try heating the carb boss area & see if you can get the aluminum to expand enough to let the brass come lose.
    Just a thought.
    Good luck.

    Thanks for that,
I have the carb off the bike, so I will try the penetrating fluid route first...

    Back2-2,
I soaked it with liquid wrench for most of the day and was successful in extracting the jet. It didnt look like it was going to go but I committed to it with a pair of vise grips... all or nothing and it came free...the threads on the needle are stripped and looks like someone might have cross threaded it or over tightened it at some point. Im going to retap the female and get new needle. Im thinking about the
R&D Racing Flex Jet Remote Fuel Screw...what do you think I should replace it with?

    Thanks for the input!!

COOL ! Glad it came out. I have a Tusk in my bike but the one lot's of CRF only guys have & sell on the site looks like a really good one. It is brass and has a "T" handle. it is brass instead of the aluminum and is a better part. Put a touch of grease on the threads when you install it. Goes true with all the bolts on the CRF. Make sure you put a little anti-seize on the shroud bolts !!! They can seize up really easy & it's a bugger to fix.

Good for you ! Your back in business.
