You also had a posting about needing a bigger tank because of the power-up kit.

Think the two might be related?
I don't know the answer to your query. I just did the same thing to my bike last night and haven't yet had a chance to test ride it, but revving it in neutral hasn't revealed any of the symptoms you describe.
Might you need to play with the fuel screw adjustment? Maybe too far out, and uses more gas and has un-burnt fuel to backfire? I ended up at about 1.75 turns out, but as I said I haven't test riden it as yet, and expect to make some fine tuning adjustments.
Any chance you didn't get something back in the carb correctly? I found the 230 carb way harder to work on than the 150/100/80. Could you possibly have gotten the slide linkage on incorrectly or forgotten to put on the little white bell shaped piece? Did you replace the fuel screw with the adjustable one? Did you put it in the right order? Rubber gasket first, small washer second, spring, followed by the fuel screw. If you left the stock one in, then you probably need to adjust it.
You don't have old cruddy gas in the tank? Probably not if you're going through it as fast as you indicate in the other post.
Just some ideas...
