    Sound Right?

    by geoff » Sat Aug 01, 2009 4:48 pm

Just installed my JD Jet Kit this afternoon. I have an 06 CRF 450R. It has an FMF power bomb header with FMF muffler. It has an twin air filter, with twin air cage. I am in Central TX, about 827 ft.
This is its old jetting. Neddle- NCYQ
    Clip- 4th from top
    MJ- 170
PS-1 1/4, was't normal position I was adjusting it here and there to try to get the bike to run better.
This is the new setting as adviced by JD Instructions.
    Neddle- JD Red neddle
    Clip- 6th from top
    MJ- 180
    PS-1 3/4
    Small o-ring installed on AP
It started right up on first kick, its idle seemed weak as it had before the re-jet. I think the idle screw is almost all the way clockwise. I didn't test ride it cause I was on pavement I am going riding tomorrow so will tweak with the PS then.

The reason I re-jet was I just had my head done by ~ and he told me my jetting was rich, which is true cause my old spark plug was black as the night.

I was wondering if the JD instructions would help with the running rich. Will report tomorrow after the ride.
Also, I'm almost positive I have the PS in right I was just wondering how do you know if its "lightly seated"?
    Thanks

Well I went riding today. It started right up first kick and we went on a 20 min ride came back, went back out started first kick with hot start. The 3rd time out before I was going to take off I looked at my PS and was going to turn it in cause I could tell it was still running rich and the thing was about to fall out, I have no idea why so I screwed it back in and took it to a 1 1/2 turns out. Went and rode came back and the next time we went to go the bike wouldn't start. 20ish kicks later it finally started and it ran like this the rest of the time. Kick and kick trying to start it. The whole time I rode it was just weird. Right off idle till 1/4 throttle it seemed to run alright but once I hit above that into 1/4 on up it just seemed to brabble and pop its hard to explain and it seemed to flatten out at around 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, like the engine was revved out sort off even though I had more throttle to give. I never could get it to idle right, I was messing with the idle screw all day. It would idle high for about 10-15 sec then go to normal idle then die. When I was done riding I took it and washed it, I did the after wash start and 1 kick started up. I took it to my garage and took the plug out, it was brand new and it was black.
I am almost at a loss. I talked to my Dad and we came up with this, I am going to check my timing, check and see if there is an air leak around the boots, and drop the needle a position. Then I just need to ride and see if that makes a diff.
What do you guys think? I would really like your guys input since it is a JD JetKit, recommend by CRF'sOnly. If my explanation about what is happening is confusing let me know and I will try to clarify. Thanks Geoff

and the thing was about to fall out,

    Ding-ding-ding !
You screwed up your fuel screw install Geoff.
It goes like this : Spring/washer/o-ring.
If not then I would suspect that you had the carb slide out and the plate that attaches to the slide doesnt have the hole where it should be, which is to say the bottom .However the quote is a huge red flag that says the fuel screw isnt in right which can cause all kinds of gnashing of the teeth. Dont get distracted, this is where your problem is.
After fixing it set the fuel screw and everything else per the JD kit instructions and go give the bike a good ride. The idle screw is a set it and forget it thing, so once al else is in order set it and be done with it.
There isn't a thing wrong with your timing. This is something simple that was missed.
If after a ride where all rpm ranges are utilized the plug still shows way rich then raise the needle clip up one space. Don't obsess on it though, a carboned up plug can stil run fine ,and if you eliminate a slightly rich condition the plug wont magically lose all that blackness from before, and you cant take a wire brush to the little wire electrode on these plug.
Spring/washer/o-ring. Lightly seated means lightly seated. But lightly seated with spring/washer/o-ring. Doug

Alright I replaced the aftermarket Fuel Screw with the stock and put it at 1 3/4 turn out and raised the clip to the 5th position. I took it out on Sat. and had no problems, it started up easily everytime and ran great. Thanks for your help Geoff
