    Correction Factor ?

    by motosicko » Thu Jun 11, 2009 2:16 pm

Can someone shed a little light my way? I've got my jetting figured out on my 3 CRF's pretty darn well. Make all the changes needed for Temp. Alt. Humidity without having to even think too hard about it. What has always confused me is why don't the same principles of jetting a 2-stroke even come close to that of these 4-strokes. I used to pick up my new 2-strokes, jetted for sea level, first thing I would do is calculate a correction factor of .12 (got that tip from a Top Fuel Funny Car mechanic that runs the nationals here in Denver), and adjust my main and pilot jets accordingly, and ended up pretty spot on with every 2-stroke I ever owned. Basically going 12% leaner, main and pilot. Now with my CRF's I'm needing to richen the pilot 2 steps from stock and usually keep the main stock or maybe 1 step leaner. How is it that stock jetting isn't even close to, as they claim, sea level specs.? And the jetting charts in the 4-stroke owners manuals aren't even close. They used to be really accurate on all my 2-strokes. I wish I had some sort of mathematical "Correction Factor" that makes sense of it, just seems like it's all "Trial and Error" nowadays. Or maybe Global Warming is now a factor.

We normally plant bulbs in the ground this time of year downunder.

It starts,it runs,it gets to where all CRFs can get to without the valve or valve plate dramas

I also have a 2004 CRF230F with intake baffle out, new needle, 132 main jet, and 45 pilot. Worked great till a friend with a XR200 told me that cutting out the metal screens would work even better. Now it is very lean and has to stay on the choke for at least ten minutes before it will run without it. And tends to hesitate badly on quick throttle openings. Have any ideas on where to go from here to fix the jetting?

Go to a 48 pilot straight away and adjust your idle mixture screw.
You may have to move the clip on the needle down 1 (position 4) as well.

Sort out the idle mixture first before moving the clip.
