    Rev limit or jacked jetting?

    by terex26 » Wed Apr 02, 2008 4:42 pm

Upon reaching the last 1/4 of the trottle on my 06' 450x i noticed a hesitation that kind of resembled a rev limiter, but i never really noticed it before while riding it under normal riding conditions. the bike seemed like it still could have made power but hit this hesitation first. Could this be a result of revvin too high in a low gear? Im basically wantin to know if it sounds like ive got jetting issues or if this is normal for my bike.
im runnin block off, 165 main with stock pilot and ncys. fuel scrw 2 turns out with cut out airbox.

Believe me, you'll know it when you hit the limiter. VERY distinctive sound, and no go faster!!!!
We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on?

main jet needs to change, dose it seem to bog before it done or rev up then flatten out, try going wot the let off 1/8 to 1/4 thats a trick that some times easer to tell

it just revs consitently through the rpms then instantly begins to sputter at about the last 1/4 throttle. i notice it mainly if im startin from a dead stop and then like drag someone off the line, it does this noticeably through the first 2 gears, after that i really dont notice it unless im goin for 5th gear pinned.

It's the rev limiter, we've seen this a zillion times.
We haven't had one post about someones bike sputtering due to needing to go up a size on the main jet, so forget that. They may sag/go flat a little early but missing or sputtering ? Nope.
With a stock airbox, exhaust and jetting the bike won't rev high enough under load to get to the rev limiter so sometimes it'll seem like a new development.
Shift up wildman, you're on a 450  Doug

really? don't blast me so quick, if it's saging or going flat it's rich, a 4 stroke lean on top will miss and sputter some what like the lean pop on decel but since i can't hear him ride for my self i gess i shod have asked if it's violent or sutle(violent would = rev limiter but most know for sure they found it) If you have changed the pipe or the air box it will need more fule on top I do this for a living on a dyno and 3RD gear roll ons. just tryin to help the guy out!

Hey, you're not getting blasted bud, we just don't want anyone chasing their tale.
It's great that you do something similar for a living, you can help us all out and we're glad to have you.
It's just that we've been dealing with these bikes and the many, many repetitive posts on identical problems and we know the fix due to that experience, that's all.
    He's hitting the rev limiter.
The point is that if the bike otherwise runs great, that it already has good jetting with a main in the 160's that though a 170 MAY be an improvement nobody has had to go to a 170 because of sputtering and/or erratic running at high rpm. Nobody.
The 170 may have the bike pulling a hair longer and a hair stronger, but it's not because it's correcting a lean misfire.
