CRF450X Popping, & Pro Circuit Pipe Red Hot

    by tclehmann » Tue Mar 11, 2008 8:28 am

    Hello
I have a CRF450X 06 and installed the 1xInternational Stage 2 Performance Kit. As per instructions have placed clip in 4th position, set full mix screw at 2 turns, replaced main jet with 162 supplied and leak jet with 65. Pinke wire has been moved to empty location rather then cut. I also cut the air-box as outlined and installed a Pro Circuit T4 Stainless pipe and silencer. I have lots of popping when the bike is rev'ed up and the pipe is getting nearly white hot after running for 5-10 minutes in idle. Seems to me that the pipe is getting to hot and the popping is a problem. Does any one have any suggestions :?: In regards to altitude I mostly ride in Baja, San Diego and Octillo Wells. Hope this helps - thanks

I am not familiar with the Stage 2 kit.

Yes, first of all do not let the machine idle that long! These machines, while water cooled, do not have a fan. Letting it idle for much over 30sec to 1 minute will begin the process of over-heating. Get the machine running and start it moving as soon as possible. I believe that your main may be too lean. You should be at least a 165. Do you have the smog still in place without mods?
What is your pilot jet size?

Roger that on the idle, thanks for your reply. Pilot jet remains the stock #45 and smog has been plugged with the Honda CRF Emission Block Off Kit from the same company (1x International) http://www.1xinternational.com/html/products1.html

If the popping on deceleration or something else? Check the carb boots, etc to make sure you aren't sucking air in. Check the fit of the pipe and joints for possible air leaks. Raise that main jet up at least one step. All of the mods you made are creating a lean condition and you should jet up to compensate.

Thanks Joe I will take a look at your suggestions and come back at you if that does not resolve. I must say that I had trouble getting the pipe to fit the silencer and had to heat silencer and grind pipe fitting to get them to fit together. Hope that there is no leak there but you cant even move them now. I any case thanks I appreciate your comments. Seems to me that in all likelyness I have a carb boot leak.

Ok so no leaks on boots or pipe. Spoke with the support at 1x International, they advised that main needle position is 4th on all their race bikes but turns out that I received wrong block off kit and am getting air from the air pipe block off part since the 250 is not as wide as the 450 tube that blocks this air hole in the cylinder head. Lets see if the replacement part will fix the pop on decelration. I can only hope and will keep you updated. Thanks for the great info and help. This is a great board, thanks to someone like you.
    Cheers -

As I said, not familiar with the products. Glad that all is well anyway. This is the first time I have heard of anyone having an issue with the block off, but they don't normally use that brand. Let us know if that fixes things up for you.
