    Need Help with son's bike

    by Zhack » Mon Nov 26, 2007 10:39 am

I know this is out of context (green bike) but all I know about carb's I learned on my CRF's. I also remember reading on here that someone had the same problem with a CRF and ~ knew EXACTLY what was going on and how to feex eet..... so here goes.....

My kid's KX65 has run like a champ all season. I was hosing it down to store for the winter. Air filter off and rag/plastic bag stuck in intake to keep water out while cleaning airbox.....you get the picture.

After reinstalling filter, bike runs like usual with choke on. As soon as choke is off, bike idles OK but dies at 1/16 to 1/8 throttle.

I'm most familiar with the Kehin Carby on the 250F's (I ride a CRF) but this seems to me llike it must be a clogged jet (pilot probably OK cause it idles, main prolly OK cuz it stalls at "early/mid" throttle.....but I'm just guessing......

    Does this sound right.....

Which jet would I go after and where is it on these little carbs.....or am I completely off base here....

Thanks a lot for any help you can give

I would say since you are putting it up for the winter take the whole thing apart and clean all of not just one particular jet.

Did you take the rag out of the intake? Just askin...

I'd recommend what was already recommended, pull it apart and clean thoroughly.

    Good Question

    by Zhack » Mon Nov 26, 2007 1:25 pm

    YUP.

Does it sound like I have the general idea of the problem right? Is that what a clogged jet would behave like?

    Thanks

From what i have read on past post sounds like you got it nailed on the head. about the clogged jets. I would also run a fresh tank a gas threw it also. I put new reeds in my sons 07 KX65 this weekend and noticed it was running a little rich and when I turned the air screw out a half turn I had the same problem. I turned it back in a 1/4 turn (1.75 turns out) and the bog went away. Might wanna check to see where the air screw is at. stock is 1.5 out.

Clean the carb (including the main needle and seat) and change the plug.

My next advise would have been to check the reed petals. The reeds open/close at almost 200 times per second. They are a high wear item and should be inspected on a regular basis. Check that a complete seal is made in the static position. Should be no air gap anywhere. Snap them once or twice gently to make sure they are sealing every time.

    Got It

    by Zhack » Tue Nov 27, 2007 7:30 am

Thanks for all the help. It was as I suspected......a clogged jet. A little wire and carb cleaner and she rips again. It felt like a solid, hard, glassy chunk that I poked out of the one of the sidfe aperatures of the main jet.....amost llike a grain of sand.....

    All's well now.

    Thanks Again.

yea, thats deffinatly a carb problem.. glad you got it fixed, next time dont use a wire, metal will re-bore passages and make the motor run richer. use a tooth pick, carb cleaner, and a air compressor works best, soak the carb over night and blow the passages out with a stong air compressor. (atleast 120 psi)
