    Pilot screw installation?

    by tomd922 » Tue Nov 20, 2007 1:14 am

So I've read your discussions and know how to install it now. My question is after I install the pilot screw how do I set it to the right position. This is my first four stroke and I am not familiar with tuning it by feel or sound. Can I mess up my bike by doing this wrong?

Welcome tomd922! You don't mention which bike you have so this is a little hard to speak to, but here is a basic thing you can try: Open your fuel screw to about 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 turns. Ride it. Bump it a 1/4 turn at a time and see if it is running the way you would like.
You may need to re-jet depending on which bike you have, as well. Tell us more about your machine and the advice can be more specific. What are you seeing to make you replace the fuel screw?

Sorry, I have an 02 crf 450. I just bought the bike and it was running great and on my first ride the pilot screw fell out. I ordered a new one and I just wondered what sort of things I should look for when setting it. Thanks

Make sure you have the spring, washer and o-ring on it in that order. I suggest that you order one of these:

It makes life a lot easier when trying to adjust the fuel screw. You will need to bring the spring, washer and o-ring over from your old fuel screw.

If you have lost any of the parts, or they weren't there (which may be why it fell out to begin with) then order this:

Yeah that the one that I ordered. The white bros one. Thanks for the help. I'll play with it.
