Should I jet lean or rich?

    by Q » Sat Jun 02, 2007 6:55 pm

02 450R. I am participating in a two day 250 mile ride that will range in altitude from 4,000 feet to 8,500 feet. :D

I have a JD jet kit which has recommendations for jetting from 3 to 6,000 feet or 6 to 9,000 feet. Because my ride will vary between these two jetting recommendations, should I jet the bike according to the lower altitude spec and run rich in the higher altitude or should I jet accoring to the higher altitude spec and run lean at lower altitude.

What would be better for the bike? My though would be that the bike would be better off runing rich than lean. Doesn't a lean bike run hot?

Yes. Jet it rich ( 3-6000). If you have an adjustable fuel screw, you might make some slight adjustments (close 1/8 to 1/4 turn as you go up) during the ride.

Thank you ~. That was a scary fast reply. You truly must be a part of the "machine". I have enjoyed reading post here for quite some time and appreciate this resource.

I will put pics of the bike in "my virtual garage" as soon as I put the million parts on my real garage floor back together.

It's the "Mystery 250" organized by http://www.sierratraildogs.com/. It is a roll chart ride for which you must pair up with another rider. They have check points, gas stops and lunch on the trail. There is a raffle and meal at the overnight in Hawthorne. They run it every year. It will be in NV from Smith Valley near Topaz Lake to Hawthorne. A bud has been encouraging a few of us to go along so this is the first time on it for me.

If you check out the pics for the 2004 ride on that web site you will see some bikes acting more like submarines than bikes. #-o
