    05 CRF450R Jetting questions...

by Wayman Racing » Tue Apr 03, 2007 9:25 am

Hi guys, thanks for any help in advance...

I go my 05 a couple months ago and just added a Full Yoshi TRC Pro Titanium Exhaust and a K&N.

I noticed right away there was a power drop. I was at Sand Mtn (Utah) and I could tell I wasn't pulling as hard up hills and it seemed not to have the same power. Bogged a lot in 3rd where I used to rally

I opened up the carb last night to see what was in it and plan on rejetting.

    I found...

    182 Main jet
    48 Slow jet
Needle with red dot on top w/ clip on the 4th notch from top (assuming it is a JD needle)

What do I do from here?

I figure I should be running leaner than before w/ my stock pipe and airfilter. But 182 seems large for my elevation (4000-8000)

Also can I use honda main jets or are the JD jets different. If so can I buy them seperate.

I am after more power and better throttle response. I know my exhaust has a spark arrestor in it. Can I take that out and gain better flow?

Any suggestions appreciated this is all new to me.

The jets are the same in the JD kit as from Honda, or KTM, etc.

You are already jetted up from stock (168/42) so you should be getting plenty of fuel. Do you still have the stock filter? Give that a try.

I wouldn't go changing the pipe just yet. Keep it simple and start with a plug reading. Change the air filter back to stock, take your time.

I already have the new pipe on...(it was a gift) I still do have the old filter. Seems weird to me that I added mods to increase the flow and I am running leaner now.

I am going to try and lower the main jet and pilot jet by one and see what happens

If you are thinking you are running leaner then lowering the jetting is wrong. Read your plug!
BTW, I meant pulling out the spark arrestor...

Doug has his opened up and just installed a JD kit. He's running a 190 main.

I would have to be running lean after adding on a pipe and K&N? Right. So I should go up from a 182 a jet size or two?

I have had people telling me I should be rich. But before I added the mods I was running pretty damn good.

What bothers me is that the new pipe probably doesn't flow all that much more than the stocker on an R.

You really need to determine what is going on before messing with jetting and such. Right now it sounds like you are flying blind.

Since you have a JD kit, you can try emailing JD and telling him what you have. He is great about replying with good help. [email protected]
