    How to -- Change Tires

    by KRCRFs » Mon Mar 06, 2006 6:10 am

So we have two brand new sets of Maxxis IT's at home and a new tire changing stand and irons. I've searched this site and the WEB for some hints and self-help guides. Didn't find much, but Ev's link at:

    http://cycoactive.com/mc/trail_tips/ctiw.html

was the most helpful of anything I've found so far.

I hope I don't screw this up, but I just can't see paying $30+ for each wheel/tire. If anybody else has some good links they'd like to share, I'd really appreciate it.

Changing tires is probably the least favorite part of this sport. Then again, there is nothing better than that first ride on a new pair of sneakers.

I brought my rims in this week to our local Honda dealer to put on new 756's since my week was booked. We are heading to Chadwick, Mo this weekend for a spring break riding trip and I was running out of time. They wanted $46 per tire! That tells me they hate changing tires as much as I do. Fortunately there is a guy down the street that has a motorcycle tire/wheel business that only charges $15 per tire. Being cheap, I still prefer to do it myself if I have time. In a pinch, I can live with $15 a tire.

I think my next investment will be a tire changing stand to get the rim off the ground. Looking around, they seem to be in the $150 range. Does anyone have any suggestions on a less expensive one that still does a good job?

    Will,

I wish I was going down to Chadwick this weekend. That is a great place to ride, my favorite in Missouri. Have a good time.

    Will,

We purchased the Tusk tire stand that mounts into the 2" receiver on your truck. It's pretty cool. Holds the tire nicely and you can use your tailgate as a "workbench". It was about $80.

    KRCRFs,

Where did you get the Tusk tire stand? Not finding it on the internet.

The best I have seen on the subject is a series of three videos by a guy from Bridgestone named Doug Schopinsky. He makes it look easy.

    Key tips:

    3 tire irons
    bead buddy
    powder
    windex
