    09 Rebuild start issues

    by Mavz2021 » Tue Apr 06, 2021 8:20 am

Hey everyone I’m a newbie here

Just done a full rebuild on my 09 r. Timing seems good, spark isn’t great but it does have spark. decompression is good, I’m at a lose end I’m not quite sure where to look or what to do next. It just will not fire up. I’ve kicked and kicked and kicked it for about 50 kicks and nothing not even a backfire. Never done a build myself before and I’m positive everything is back where it should be. All plugs seem good connected good.

Any help or pointers of where to look next or how to test anything is working correctly will be fantastic and much appreciated.

    Thanks

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

Is this a 250 or 450 ??? , as a 250 would have a carb and a 450 would have EFI for 09 , so big difference in troubleshooting ..... Also have you tried pulling the plug , dipping it in some gas and putting it back in (tighten it down) and try to start it right away ?? , if it starts then it is a fuel issue ....

If the bike sat apart for more than a couple months , I would also worry about the gas going bad unless you are using Non Ethanol , or race gas , otherwise , the gas can be the issue , older gas will start your car or lawn mower just fine , but not these bikes

If it is a 250 and a carb , make sure the accelerator pump is squirting , make sure the Pilot Jet is not clogged .... if it is a 450 Make sure when you kick the engine you hear the fuel pump working ....

If it is a 250 , make sure the coil power wire is attached correctly as that is common to pull it off (it may look hooked up but is not) when you pull the tank and the fuel valve gets hooked on it

Those are a few places to start ... :-k

It probably would have helped to post this in the appropriate bike section (250R or 450R section depending) as it would be noticed more , rather than in the "How To" section ..

    Hi

    It’s a 450

I will try your options and see how I get on. Thank you for your reply

I believe the fuel pump is pumping fuel as I can hear the fuel getting sucked. I did use the 6week old fuel but only a little.thought it would be ok to start it. But clearly it makes a difference. Not tried the spark in fuel option so I’m going to try that with a brand new spark . I’ll put some fresh high octane in also

    Thanks for your advice
