    Crankshaft Bolt Not Straight

    by LaDeeDa » Fri Jan 15, 2021 4:34 pm

    Hey Guys,

2004 250 CRF. Doesn't start, opened up and everything is in spec: valves, piston, cylinder, big-end.

However, after double-checking the crankshaft bolt, it appears not lined-up properly; not even possible to get a socket down there.
    See picture:

Seems like a new crank to me...but I want to confirm that this bolt should, indeed, be properly aligned?

    Thanks!

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

The hole is not for accessing the bolt head , it is for checking the balancer shaft timing , if you look at the front of the hole you will see a triangle embossed in it on the outside ( you can clearly see it in your picture) , you will then (when the engine is at TDC) see a dot punched into the gear , when they are aligned , then the balancer shaft is in alignment , the hole is simply to access the marks ..... Hope that helped ...

I have attached a picture from a page in the Factory Service Manual , to show you the image looks the same as your picture , so nothing is misaligned , if it was that far off , the engine would not even turn over , let alone the racket it would make if it was even able to run , the case would be destroyed ..... so not to worry ... just make sure the marks are aligned when the other 2 timing marks are lined up ( the flywheel mark in the small hole on the opposite side , and the slash marks on the upper timing gear for the cam chain)... and you should be good to go ... ;)

Here is another pic to show you the marks
