How-To: Break In Procedure

There are lots of break in procedures...this is the procedure we recommend:

1. Make sure you have clean and correct amount of oil, clean oil filter, clean and oiled air filter, coolant topped off.

2. You will conduct three 15 minute break in cycles as follows:

a. Start the bike and let it idle to operating temperature. Do not let it overheat. Getting it to operating temperature will not take long.

b. Once at operating temperature, ride the bike focusing on creating as much compression as possible. Vary the RPM's, don't rev it to the limiter (70-80% max), don't lug the motor. The best way to generate the most compression is riding up and down hills. When coming down the hill ride a gear lower and let the engine's compression braking rev the motor up.

c. Let the motor cool down for at least 15 minutes

d. Repeat for two more cylces of ride then cool down.

3. Change the oil and oil filter. Check coolant level. If there was any fluid loss you must find out what caused this loss before continuing to use this motor.

4. Your bike is now ready to ride it like you stoled it!

One think I m wondering boss: no rev-meter so what gear is best to use( to me 1st and 2nd to get the most of compression) and let me sum it up once again, to ride it in three sessions of 15 mins each and using downhills all the time?? To wait to cool down after each session, then finally change oil and measure it?
That's it I think?

the goal is to create as much compression as possible during the break in sessions. down hill riding makes this easy but it also increases the chance that you'll be riding at the same RPM which you don't want. so, up hills, down hills both work great. 70-80% max estimated RPM fluctuating the RPM as you ride.

This is essentially what my dealership told me to do but for the first 600 miles. Not 15 mins at a time of course. I have been doing just this and now have 290 miles on the bike. Would it be considered broke in? I have been keeping an eye on fluids but haven't changed my oil yet. Do you sell Honda oil or whatever would be best to replace it with? If not can you direct me to somewhere online to pick it up? I know you sell the oil filter but is it worth picking up a magnetic drain plug also? I would prefer to give you my money.

You motor is well past break in. The procedure outlined if followed completes the break in. All you are attempting to do with break in is seat the piston rings.

As for an oil recommendation, I don't make recommendations other than what is found in your manual. We use Rotella T Synthetic on the engine side and Delo 400 organic on the transmission side. Again, this is not a recommendation just telling you what we use.

Thank you for your reply Ken. Would I change both sides or just the engine oil for now?

Looking in the manual I don't see anything about transmission oil. Am I being a bonehead?

it should have been changed, both sides, right after the above break in procedure.
