They shouldn't be a pain to start unless you have valve issues.... But definately harder than a 2 stroke...
Just remember it is not like a 2 stroker, you do NOT need to pump the throttle when kicking it over...
Also, if your kickstart is uncomfortable for you, maybe you could adjust the position so it starts the downstroke in a different more comfortable position for you to get the full kick...
