Does anyone know the criteria for making a dirtbike street legal? Any air-cooled 250 would make a good bike for street riding, having good mileage and reliablility as well as offroad rideability.

Go to your State's DMV page and you should be able to find your answer for sure. It usually involves some combination of headlight, tail/brake light, mirror, and DOT street legal tires. I converted a CRF 450x in Colorado and it was a piece of cake. Good luck.
