10wt OK for front forks, outer tube only?

    by stevendavis » Sun Feb 22, 2015 3:11 pm

I'm changing my front fork springs to .49's and thought I'd also try 10wt oil. I'm not opening up the inner tube at all. Is it ok to leave the 5wt oil in the inner tube and use 10wt on the outer tube with the new .49kg springs? Thanks.

Also, does any one know if the 07 is the SSF fork? I"m looking at getting one of these:

I am not aware that you cannot, 10wt is very heavy for forks. 5wt is standard, some 5wt is closer to 2.5 than 10. If you fork oil is more than 'months' old than you should change the cartridge oil. If it is over a year old, then you really need to change the cartridge oil.

First gen Showa Single Function Forks (SFF) were on the 2011-2012 KX's. Second gen are air forks. Your bike does not have either.

Thanks riddler. My bike is an 07, and I don't think they have ever been serviced! I'll look into changing out the inner chamber oil as well.

After doing some more reserch, I found that the SFF, Separate Function Forks, tool will work on mine. The left fork has the same cap assembly as my Dual Chamber Forks.

What is it that you plan to get out of the tool? It looks like it will only grab the cap, and not loosen the cartridge.

If it does not have the ability to loosen the cartridge from the outer then you are still going to need to purchase a cap wrench and a 32mm socket.

okay, kept scrolling through the images from the search that you provide and found this:

It looks like it should work.?.?.? I would still be concerned about putting things back together. The normal cap wrench is very thin but still poses a challenge when working directly under the bars.

Got that tool in today and tried it out. It works very well. It will do both the outer nut and inner chamber nut. I pulled the forks apart today and tested the inner dampening rod tube. It rebounds ok. I don't think the inner chamber is leaking at all. I measured about 10oz of oil that came out of each outer fork chamber. There was still some in the inner chamber top end that I let drain out as well. I don't think I'll pull the inner chamber apart right now. Once I clean and inspect the parts I think I'll put the new springs in and 12.8oz of oil, new seals and see how it does.

Why not change the cartridge at the same time? The oil is definetly broken down just on time alone. Throw in all the heat from the fork usage and...

Though my bike is an 07, I bought it early last year and it had very low hours on it. I looked at the outer chamber oil and its pretty clean. I know I'm going to be looking at doing some revalving at the end of this season so I'm thinking of waiting until then. I realy want to see just what the outer springs alone will do for me before I change the valving. I have every thing torn apart and I'm on the fence about changing the inner seals and oil at the moment!?!?

You need a "hosting site" , like Photobucket or Image Shack , then you upload your pics to that , then paste the forum link in your post and to make sure you have the right link , hit "preview" , and make sure the image shows up and then hit post
