    Front fork damper rod retracts

    by tbone67 » Sat Feb 02, 2013 7:40 pm

I have an 06 450r and and changed the leaky fork seal. I decided to change the inner cartridge oil at the same time. Changed the oil and the rod would not protrude on its own as it should. It also sometimes sucks itself back in. I read all the research and went through the fun task of changing the so called "leaky cartridge seal". Drilled the peen holes, heated it up, broke it loose and changed the seal. All that work and it stills sucks the rod back in!! Please help! Any advice. No I did not changed anything on the inner cartridge assembly and it has RaceTech valves. Yes I pumped the rod several times to get the air out. I've watched every video on how to do this process and I'm doing exactly what everyone else does.

pretty sure you still have air trapped. rod not pushing out is bad pressure. Rod retracting in my experience is an air bubble that causes a vacuum.

Did you tilt the cartridge a bit - 15 degrees or so - when pumping? that usually frees up the big pockets.

No I didn't. I have tried the procedure approximately 7 times and tried to bleed the oil by pumping the rod countless times. I'm not to excited about trying to bend the damper rod a bit but when give it a shot. Thanks for the advice.

I am not saying to "bend" the damper rod, just tilt the whole thing to the side a bit rather than holding it strait up and down. Titling to the side gives the bubbles a way to move out from under the shims.

Ok, I also talked with RaceTech (because I have their valves) and they said I needed to replace the reservoir rod shaft seal. So that will be the next project. If anyone has done it with pics, it would be greatly apppreciated.

I received my seal that is INSIDE the floating piston. Changed it out and the damper rod pushes out like it should! Thank the Lord! :-) I didn't have all the proper tools but managed through it. I will be testing it out this weekend, hope all will go well. Thanks!!
