front end cocked a bit... whats wrong?

    by BikeNoob » Thu Jun 03, 2010 6:22 pm

i just got a 06 crf230f and while riding noticed that when it was close to topped out on pavement it would wobble a bit. while looking at it with a buddy we noticed something in the front end was off a little but couldn't figure out what it is. when the bars are straight the fender is straight but the wheel is cocked a little to the left and isn't directly under the fender. it rides fine and is unnoticable until you get it almost topped out on pavement. ideas?

My suggestion would be to loosen the axle and the pinch bolts on the triple clamps. This should allow the front end to settle into their correct position or allow you to straighten out your forks. Probably got twisted fork legs causing the wheel to be cocked slightly. This usually happens from a dirt sampling.

Your words give the perfect picture. Do as jtsurfs post suggests and you will fix the twisted front end. Make sure to torque the pinch bolts to spec. And expect to have to do this each time the bike hits the ground on the handlebars.

When I bought my 230f my front-end felt a little off as well.

I just put the front wheel between my knees and moved the handle bars. Just like you might do on your bicycle.

It only took a tiny tweak to make it feel right again. Obviously, if it's really tweaked the advice above should be followed...

Weird that they don't give fork torque in owners manual. Front axle pinch bolts are 9ft. lbs.
Here is a owners manual, give it a minute to load. http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/assets/OWN ... RF230f.pdf

Maybe ~ will chime in with Service Manual Torque specs.
