is it possible to check fork oil level and check for type of spring installed, without completely disassembling the forks? I bought this bike used, the forks seem good but tend to bottom fairly easily, I just want to check level and spring type.

You don't have to completely disassemble...but pretty close. The inner cartridge needs to come out. Your forks can never be hurt by putting fresh fluid in them and if you are breaking them down, you might as well.
