    Need some advice...

    by nedirtbikr » Mon May 19, 2008 12:54 pm

    Quick background:

    - 230# (with gear)
    - Mostly (now) MX riding
    - '06 CRF450R
    - I have the correct shock and fork springs for my weight/riding preference
    - stock shim stack
    - Do my own service

    Here's the deal...
I currently use the Maxima 5wt fork oil. I thought it was working okay, but now question myself. Before, I had run 10-weight oil and I'm thinking I might need to go back. I seem to be bottoming out on jumps I used to not bottom out on (and no...I haven't gained a bunch of weight lately  .

It also seems like I've been blowing seals lately. I'm already planning on replacing the bushing sliders/guides (they are showing brass color and the service manual says they should be replaced when that occurs) and maybe going with Tusk or Synergy seals (both look like they have a pretty good following.)

    Questions...
    1. Would the replacement back to 10-weight be a good "first step" in figuring this out or should I be looking at something else?

    2. Could my seal problem be related to question 1?

    Thanks guys!

    1. I would reccomend this. My friend Dan is a large guy too, about 220lbs. He used to bottom out ALOT even off small jumps. We turned the compression and made it a wee bit harder, that seemed to help. He had the bright idea of using the 10wt, and that helped way more than turning the compression alone.

    2. It could be, from bottoming out like that with low weight oil in.

    Hope this helps!

I'll try to get in contact with him to ask what his rebound/compression clickers are set at.
