    Striped front master screws

    by dlpmx » Tue Mar 04, 2008 3:36 pm

Those pesky stripped screws in the front master cylinder are easy to remove. Take a spring loaded center punch. 1/2 way between the stripped x where the phillips goes and the outside of the screw head punch 1 hole straight down. Punch the hole 2 times. Now tip the handle of the punch to a 45 degree angle, punch until the screw spins free(usually on the 1st or 2nd punch)leave the point of the punch in the hole and use it to spin the screw out. Replace the screw with new.05 to .10 at the hardware store.

An impact driver works great as well. I find it easier to just not over tighten them though.

I used a dremel grinder and cut a new slot for a flat head screw driver. I've had to do this twice actually. Worked both times!!! It scratches the cap up a little bit but it looks fine.

This is a good example on why to have the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) No.#1 phillips. I got mine here :

and it not only works on those but also the pesky carb screws.Just make sure what you buy includes the JIS no.#1.
There's quite a bit of difference between the JIS no.#1 and ours, and once you use one you'll see just how much...no more stripped phillips heads ! :D Doug
