I have never heard of this being a problem. My guess would be either a) a overly loose chain, which could cause other even worse problems, or b) a problem with the chain guide.

An effective chain wont have much side to side play at all. I had this problem on my new 450R after about 3 rides. I replaced it with a new x-ring chain and havent had a problem since. Hate to break the news to you, but it's time for a new chain.

I guess it could also be that your rear wheel is out of line, but it would really have to be sideways for a good chain to hit it.

I had the same problem with my 450r. Taking out some of the slack helped for a bit, but the chain has to be replaced.

if you are running a 120 rear, even a brand new chain will chew it up a bit.

    run a smaller tire.

don't run the chain too tight!
