Fuel tank bolt broken in hole

    by Zorrito » Sat May 15, 2021 11:12 am

:-D I bought some cheap rear after market red bolts for my '06 450X, dumb idea I know!! While swapping all my plastics I tried replacing the screws with the fancy red crap I bought off eBay. Some fit fine, others not so much...3 heads broke off and I was able to grab the bolt with some pliers and remove the male end from the the female hole. One of them broke inside the hole...I've tried a "screw out" gadget...and it did NOT screw out the broken piece. I'm trying not to destroy the hole threads...so, I open the floor to you motorheads and request tips/advice and ask that you don't beat me up too bad...I'm close to drinking myself do death anyway!! thanks in advance.

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

I am guessing these are Aluminum , and you tightened them down a little too much , the Aluminum ones don't take the torque like the steel or Titanium ones do ..... Unfortunately the only way to get them out is to drill a Pilot hole and use a Easy Out/Screw Extractor ,
much like you have attempted .... the only other way , is to try to drill dead center , and keep enlarging the bit till the bolt is paper thin , but not enough to get into the threads , it may back out easier then , then either try again with the Easy Out , or use a pointed pick or something small to work loose the threads .... , some of those extractors work like a drill and cut into them , then you reverse the drill and it will back right out ..... unfortunately , that is the only solution outside from drilling it out completely and buying a Heli-Coil kit (which would come with the correct drill) , and replace the threads with a insert , but being it is Aluminum , you should be able to get it out , it just may take some finesse ...

JimDirt, I stuck with it...got it out, re-tapped it and voila-worked like a champ. (now I can add "master Finesser" to my resume) Thanks again! Pix coming soon!
