    2008 float bowl on a 2005

    by toddo » Tue Feb 11, 2020 5:27 pm

I've got a 2005 450X and want to get a 2006 or up float bowl to pick up the drain, but at the same time want to make use of the accelerator pump upgrade off the 2008. So, rather than getting a 2006 bowl and punching out the check ball, can I get a 2008 bowl and accelerator pump? I can't find an image online that is definitively a 2008 bowl so I can't be sure it will fit the 2005 carb. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

Yes the bowl will "bolt up" , I did a similar thing (put a 06 450X bowl) on my 02 450R , then later on because my carb body was worn out , I upgraded to a 05 R carb , and put the 06 X bowl on it .... all the 450 carbs from 02-08 will interchange parts ..... ;)

Jim, How did you wear out a carburetor body? Just curious as I have never seen a carb body "worn out".

Where the slide goes , you could see serious wear/grooves I am guessing from all the sand/dirt that got by the filter at some point in its life , and what I was experiencing was inconsistent idling , that could not be cured by needle/needle jet replacements or floating valve seals , etc .... I was talking a lot with leardriver about it in PM's , and he suggested that the body might be wore out .... so after trying every possible part that could wear in the carb , I came to the conclusion that the body must be the issue (I literally replaced every moving part in the carb with the exception of the slide itself and the body) I got a 05 450R carb off EBay , and all is well now ...... :-k

Interesting. I have seen slides wear out and give the same symptoms you described. Causes a lot of people trouble trying to diagnose issues and the last thing many do is replace the slide to correct the issue. Street bikes have the same issue. Flat slides seem to have that happen more than the round slides.
I have never actually seen the body or slide cylinder wear out. But if you had dirt and sand going through the carb I guess it's possible.
At least you fixed and go to go.

Thanks for the feedback! My AP diaphragm is shot, so I want to use the '08 AP, and if I understand it, I'd still have to pop the checkball out of the bowl if I do an '06 bowl, so the cleanest solution is both '08 bowl and AP.
