Shift Lever - Need some help here

    by driver3 » Fri Aug 10, 2018 6:52 am

As many of you are aware, the stock shift lever can punch a hole in your side case. I have personally had this happen. See here -->

    and fixing with jb weld

I got this shift lever - Hammerhead Designs - it is shaped differently and does not punch my side case (rocky trails seem to smash my shift lever into the side case) It's a different design, see pics. It does not have a sharp corner where the spring loaded shifter tip connects to the actual lever.

But it broke when taking it off to fix my stator....

So CRFS doesn't sell the same one I bought, so I just grabbed another one that looks the same. But it's not the same.

Now I have the point again - and you can see the good hammerhead still hit the case, but did not have the ability to punch a hole.

OK, so where can I find my old shift lever! or one like it!

That is weird , as i have the original 06 Honda lever on my 06 X and its about 1/4"+ away from the case , it would have to get hit pretty hard (i have had a few crashes on the shifter side and never had it hit the case yet) for it to hit the case , but in looking at your pictures , the "original" Hammerhead seems to be bent up pretty bad which would indicate why it was rubbing and also the head seems to be tipped/pointed forwards like the backside is worn off and there is nothing left to stop the pivoting of the head

The new one does look to be a different shape but that could be due to it not being bent as much as the old one from a design change , or it could it be that the "old" one was for a R and not a X , and maybe the new one is also for the R , as there is a difference in the case design from R to X , as how far it sticks out and where it sticks out due to the X having a larger stator winding , as i used a X aftermarket shifter on my R and it rubbed , i had to grind it down on the corner on a angle so it did not rub in the same spot yours is , mine after grinding it down to fit looks exactly like yours , if that helps , with the exception of the tip is not pointed forwards like yours , and mine is a X shifter on a R , so maybe you have a R shifter by mistake on your X ?? , i also had to pull it out before i tightened the hold down bolt to help keep it out farther from the case even after grinding (doing this was easier than sending it back to get another shifter , i just made that one work , and its still on there with no issues) , so maybe you purchased one for the R by accident ?? :-k , if not , I would PM Ken and see what he thinks to remedy this situation (show him the pictures and explain everything including any crashes , or if it rubbed when you first installed it , etc.) , although if its hitting after impacts , there is not much to be done except get a protective ignition cover or not fall on the shifter side :-~ ....so go ahead and PM Ken , i am sure he will be able to come up with a solution or a reason why it might be hitting or not fitting correctly .......

Actually, the hammerhead one had plenty of clearance, but was a little shorter. The way the spring loaded tip was shaped, it made it so there was no point to strike the case and punch a hole.

I actually don't have a problem crashing on it, it's the tight tall rock situations. That punch with the factory shifter occurred by you near Phx... going up and down Red Creek to and from the Verde River. You're essentially riding up a tight creek bed and there are some tight spots where rocks come up and kiss your pegs going through. That hit was able to push the shifter into the case. It flexes and pops back out with plenty of clearance.

My order from CRFs shows this (wow, from 2012)

Yea i was just kidding with you on the falling , and i ride that kind of stuff a lot myself , just got lucky so far i guess , i did let a friend ride my 02 R up in some lava rock and i rode thru it no issues on my X , and he followed and then he fell over right where the rocks ended punching a hole right thru the ignition cover , i did not have any JB Weld or that Moose Epoxy with me at the time (now i never go riding without it) , so we had to tow the bike 10 miles back to the truck , it lost pretty much the all of the oil out of the hole on the tow back , anyway , he replaced the ignition cover with a brand new Honda unit , and its been great since

As far as the part goes , that looks to be for the correct bike , so maybe do as i mentioned and PM Ken and see what he has encountered with that shifter , maybe others have had the same issue as far as fitment goes , as it should not hit at any time , so something is amiss :-k , and yea , i have been here in these forums since 06 , and still riding the same bike i registered with back then ...

And Red Creek is actually about 1,000 miles southeast of where i am at , so not really "close" , I am guessing you are in the west somewhere ??? (maybe Nevada or New Mexico or something if your riding in Az. ???) , i am more like in the Boise,Idaho to Ontario,Oregon area (about 80 miles east of me to Boise , and about 25 miles south to Ontario,Oregon , and about 10 miles west to the Oregon border)

For some reason I thought you were Phoenix. No problem. On the hammerhead site, they list part numbers that are the same for some x's and r's. I found a used one on ebay and I'm going to try that. I don't have the cover on, just got the new stator from rickystator. When I put it together I'll try both shifters and see what looks best. I'll post pics.
