    CRF450X on the track?

    by Lurch1980 » Sun Apr 22, 2018 11:14 am

    Hi Guys,

I use to ride aggressively on the track then went to woods riding for years before I took a pretty long break. Now my son is starting to ride and we're starting off at the track. I figured an X model will be decent at the track and great in the woods, so that's why I bought an 05 450X. Now I'm wondering if I can make it more track friendly, but here's the catch. I'm 6'6" and 300lbs (I compete in Olympic weightlifting, so this isn't just unwanted fat to lose...) I figured I need some power since I'm not the typical 185lb rider. The bike has a 500cc Big Bore kit that was there when I bought it and an FMF slip on I'm having trouble identifying. Other than that its stock.

I know to go do the standard mods like the air box mod, carb jetting and all that, but im not sure what to do about the cam. I've read that the hot cams stage three cam works great with big bore kits. Does anyone have experience with that and does anyone have any experience racing an X on the track? I'd be interested in any other mods I could do. I'd basically love to have this be an R model with the wide ratio tranny. I use to be an aggressive B rider in Colorado just to give you an idea of my skill level (hoping I get it back as I start riding again, lol)

An 05-07 R cam is just the ticket to waking up these bikes.

An X on the track will bottom out on big jumps, but at your size you could say that about most bikes. You can have a ton of fun at the track on an X.

Okay, so just a newer R cam then. I'm guessing the big bore doesn't matter that much then?

You are right. At my size I bottom everything out on the track. My bike, my buddies '16 YZ450F, my other buddies KTM 350 SX.... I'm thinking I'll have RG3 fix that for me. I just wanted to make sure I could wake this up for the track before putting the money into the suspension. Know what I mean?

It will never be an awesome track bike. Many of the things that make it so good off road work against the track environment. You can still zoom around and have fun on it.
