    CRF450x Starting/running issues

    by boyter » Sat Mar 07, 2015 10:18 am

All right guys, I have a dilemma with my CRF and am at a loss of what to do next.

    The issue:
Push the starter button, bike fires into life, release the starter, bike dies.
After alot of troubleshooting (in the desert) we figured that as long as the starter button is shorted the bike will run.
To get round the problem of the starter constantly running, we disconnected the battery, zip tied the starter button on and kickstarted it for the rest of the ride.

Fortunately I have access to another CRF to trouble shoot with and have tried the following:
Disconnected the start & stop buttons (in case there was a weird ground issue) and shorted out the clutch switch. all work as they should.
    Swapped out the starter relay
    Swapped out the CDI
    Swapped out the entire loom
    Swapped out coil
    Swapped out rectifier
I have not swapped the TPS but have disconnected it (the other bike runs fine without it)

The only other thing I can think of is swapping the stator and pulse generator but I cannot see how this would be the issue.

Anyone heard of an issue like this? any idea's how to fix it?

    Thanks!

Wiring diagram here, just in case you don't already have one.

It's a pretty simple circuit. If the clutch switch is functional, that is the starter will not work unless the clutch switch is depresses, then you only have the tail of the circuit to follow.

As this is a new condition, as you trace the wires check every plug type connector. Unplug and clean it up, use some dielectric grease once the connectors are cleaned up.

FYI, problem solved. It was the stator. Not sure what the exact issue in the stator is but I replaced it with another and it solved the issue.

Seems odd, but I'm truly glad you got it sorted. Ride safe.

Its a new one on me too, but after replacing every other electrical part on the bike it had to be.

The issue repeats on the old bike too, so for sure its the issue....would have (and was) my last guess though.
