    New bar setup advice needed.

    by xploded » Tue Nov 25, 2014 9:21 pm

I've been riding for a little over a year. The previous owner of my bike put the Easton 1 3/8 "super fat bar" on it. I'm told it's a good bar, but I'm too new to know better. The problem is it doesn't allow me to customize much. I'd like to redo my entire setup with a new bar, scotts stabilizer with a sub mount (I'm 6'1"), wrap around hand guards and a vapor trail computer. Any advice on what kind of bar to shop for would be helpful. I ride mainly Arizona trails. Not sure on 7/8 or 1 1/8 bar, or bend, rise, etc... My current bar appears to have a lot of rise, and I am tall so that seems right, but I still feel like I'm hunched when riding standing up. Help is appreciated here. I need some guidance. Thanks

Well, I'm six feet and have sub mount Scott's with Pro Taper KX bend bars. The risers for sub mount and the KX bend make standing very comfortable. I rarely sit. I also have the Voyager GPS. Piece of crap in my opinion. In fact it's broken for no apparent reason. There's no map sets that you can upload.

Though i am not 6'1" (i am 5'10") , i use Pro Taper 1 1/8" Pastrana Bend (the tallest bar you can get as far as i know) and its very comfortable , if your using a Under Bar Stabilizer Mount then you wont want as tall of a bar , maybe a RC Bend Renthal would be good or what Kap mentioned

I prefer the taller mounts/bar because of back issues and it helps me stay more upright instead of hunched over , i just rode a 2015 KTM 300XC-W last weekend and i loved the bike with the exception of how low the bars were , it was like i was riding down hill on a mini bike , all hunched over and the bars were too close as the owner had them in the rear position which was like having the bars in your lap (he was shorter than me)

I run my bars in the forward position , the Honda mounts (i use Tag 1 1/8" Mounts which also allow normal or forward position) will spin around and give 4mm of forward offset position which helps with comfort , as the taller the bar setup is , the farther forward you will want the bars to be or they will be right in your chest

See my setup in my garage. I'm a touch over 6. Perfect position for me.

    Bars

    by JUSTIN91280 » Wed Apr 22, 2015 7:27 pm

Jimdirt or anyone else that installed the pastrana bend bars. Where you able to just install the new bars without modifying anything? I need to get taller bars because my arms are on the shorter side. I was worried with the rise from these bars all the stock cable that have to be transferred onto the new bars may not reach since all the cables already feel tight with the stock bars and it doesn't seem like they may work?. Does anyone have any ideas or no about this.

Thanks I would appreciate any input.

The only thing i changed (obviously) was the risers , to 1 1/8" , other than that the cables(stock components) , etc all fit fine

In fact when i put risers/taller bars on my 02 450R , i got a 450X front brake line (Galfer braided line) ,because the stock R cable made the brake line too tight , the X cable was 4" longer than the R and worked perfect

So you should be fine with up to a 30mm taller riser/bar setup above stock

On a side note , i run my bars in the "forward" position on the bar clamp (they are usually offset) , and you will need to run the bar forward since going taller will make the bar closer to you (in your lap so to speak , because the taller you go the farther back the bar ends up) , so you run the mount forward to keep the bars in the same position as with the lower bars , otherwise it will be uncomfortable and will throw your center of gravity farther back , set forward you will still be in a forward riding position where you should be , and all is good!

    Risers

    by JUSTIN91280 » Thu Apr 23, 2015 11:11 pm

Did a little more research on the forum and ordered the risers instead of bars. Haven't been on crf's only in awhile but they should sell them. I like supporting the store. Got a nice ride in today! Dirtjim must be nice out west! It's limited for us guys out east! Thanks again for the input!

Yea we usually start good riding in February , if you don't mind the cold you can start earlier , i usually ride from Feb to October (i only stop riding because that is when Hunting starts) , though i do ride at the MX track till November

In California , in the southern part anyways , they can ride all year around , here in Idaho , we do have winters , though not as bad as back east , i got 2ft of snow at the house this last winter , so yea the west has the longer riding weather , but we have deserts out west , so that is where we do the early part of the season riding , Feb to late June , i ride deserts , July to October i ride woods after the snow melts in the mountains ;)
