Auto Decompressor Noise

This weekend we went for our usual 23-30 mile single trail loop, the bike was a little hotter than usual and my battery went semi flat, when I used the electric start I would get an odd "rapping" sound on my top end. It was turning over 1/3 speed. Is this normal with the auto decompression system? The bike would kick over fine and there were no issues with throttle response, clutch action or kick starting the bike. There was just the odd sound I have not heard in the 7 years I have ridden the bike. Any and all help is appreciated...Thanks.

did you hear the noise when kick starting , as well ?? , or just with the E start ??

Are you positive the noise was coming from the de-compressor , and also when you got the bike going and rode for a while i am assuming the battery came back up , so did it do it then as well when the battery was fully up ??

Jim,,,it only did it when the battery was very low on power. The battery did take a charge, i verified the output to the battery while running is 13.8 volts. When I would kick start the bike there was no odd noise whatsoever. When the battery was fully charged I did not hear the noise either. It was just a new noise and my buddy i ride with even commented on the sound. I checked the oil level on both sides and the coolant level was fine as well, i don't know if it was a function of the engine being very hot and the battery being weak. I just want to ask for everyones "gut check" for lack of better words....Thanks for the assistance and any insight.

I am guessing it was because of the slow cranking with the E-Start , if it did not do it while kick starting and did not do it when the battery was up , then i would not worry about it , if it was worn or had broken , it would have done it in the other situations , which is why i asked , you should be ok ..

Jim, that was my thought as well but being an engineer I can appreciate the "validation" piece of the equation and ask ogthers for input...Thanks again!

Yea , if you crank the motor over with the kick start by hand slowly , you can hear the decomp working , they do click when moving , the momentum seems to quiet it up
