    Premature rear brake pad wear?

    by aoyue2702 » Sat May 11, 2013 4:17 pm

my 2012 450X has about 35-40 hours on it, and today I noticed the rear brake was making some noise, I looked at the brake and seen that they were completely gone! It even looks like the top of my rotor has developed a small "lip" on the edge from where the metal has been rubbing.

Is this normal wear for 35-40 hours? I don't do any racing, only trail riding.

I also have a flatland disc guard and caliper guard installed, if that makes any difference.

can anyone offer any advice? What is the normal lifespan of brake pads for the 450x? My front pads still seem to be 40-60%

Also, What kind of pads do you recommended me getting as replacement? I was thinking about getting the EBC carbon graphite series? Image Is that good or should I go with something else for trail riding. Maybe OEM is best?

Kinda hard to say what is normal depending how much you use them and how muddy/dusty it is where you ride.
On my 450r I go through a set of rears in about 35 hours. That is track riding.
I bought a set of EBC one time for it but I did not like the way they felt at all, went back with OEM.
I dont remb what compound I got in the EBC though.

It's really muddy in my area, lots of mud holes and muddy trails.

Well that will do it for sure. But sounds like you got pretty good life out of that set.
The rotor doesnt look too bad in the pic, I would prob just put a new set of brakes on it and go.
Also noticed some leaves and dirt kinda packed in their. That can cause the brakes to drag some so keep and eye on that when you cleain your bike. Might help to take the brakes off every now and then to cleain that crap out.

EBC pads are the worst ever. They heat up quickly and fade to nothing. That's been my experience. Use anything but EBC

+1, the EBC sintered metal pads run very hot causing brake fad/squealing. I like the OEM Honda pads for a good balance of long life/lower heat. To the OP, you should be glad your pads lasted so well, sometimes in the southern Ohio mud we will wear through rear pads in less than 100 miles!

Wow... This 450x is new to me. I'm used to the older bikes when pads last several seasons lol.
