    "Best" handguards for 450X?

    by liquidcooled » Mon Mar 28, 2005 7:53 pm

I've seen piecemeal postings and reviews, but thought I'd ask the group for an opinion. Important considerations to me are strength, weight, cost, ease of installation, color match.

All those votes and no replies....Anyways, I put on the PowerMaad hand guards on. Here's what I have to say...The bolt that holds the guard onto the bracket is soft and bends easily, use a slightly bigger one like a 1/4-20. Color match is good to match Honda Red. (Ask for CR Red) A piece unclips to expose vents for hot weather, also a bigger piece can be bought and snapped in extending the height of the guard. :D

this is a good question and a good poll. i'm sure everyone has seen our review of the fastway handguards. we haven't reviewed the cycra's but plan to. in terms of full coverage handguards these two are great. dealing with each daily i can tell you that both are very well designed and engineered. both will do a great job in protecting your hands as well as your levers. you absolutely can not go wrong with either.

having said that the fastway's are built of thicker material in the metal handguard area. the mounting hardware also appears to be stronger. i don't think you can find a stronger handguard set. if you run a damper (GPR or Scotts) they have a top bar clamp that doubles as a mount point for both the stabilizer and handguards.

both the cycra and the fastway have replaceable plastic hand shields. defintely a necessary feature if your ride actually leaves the garage!

    did I miss something?
are there special brush guards for different makes/models?
or should this move to the product review section?

I like the Acerbis Rally II
the plastic only construction absorbes a lot of impact
it does not just pass (most of) it on to your handlebars
and it does not stay bent like the aluminum versions do
plus the soft mud-shovels do hurt a lot less on your thigh, when you crash stupid

In OZ they are marketed as the EGO by Barkbuster.
In the US several people have their name on them one of which is "Wacker" available through motonation.

These handgaurds (ego's) would clearly outsell any other handgaurd in OZ.

The fit is great, colors to match all makes.
Black is always good because these will last you more than one bike.
But the replacement plastics are a great system

Sold with kits to suit your style of fat bar or SE.

    Anything else is a compromise.

    IMHO

Note: Not listed in my signature, because it is a given here in OZ.

I am running Renthal twin walls on my 450X. I installed the UFO handguard system back in May. I was unhappy with this system for numerous reasons and recently purchased the Fastway standard kit. I am very pleased with the installation and the strength of the product. They look good also. I have not taken a spill yet, but hope that they will hold up well.
At this time, I would not spend money on handguards unless it was on the Cycra or Fastway system.

I like the new Acerbis Multiplo. They have the turn down bend on the end like the Cycras as well as the changeable plastic. Their only downside is price. You can buy the Fastway system for about the same amount of money.

Acerbis Rally pros.......the black ones look awesome. Dont get the red ones....They look pink when installed and pink handguards have no business on a 450x!!!!

Alright then, don't know about the best but...I've got the Cycra's. Seem to be sturdy, and fit well except for the headlight mount (which i zip-tied on, they may have a fix for this now). Keep in mind I haven't really crash tested them but they do have a cool replaceable plastic slider on the side...the supermoto guys seem to like them.
You can get large enduro shields or low-profiles.
    Take a look...

    The bigger, the better!!!

I was running Magnum barkbusters last weekend. Went down in the rocks and shattered the end bone in my index finger, tore off the nail / peeled back the whole end of my finger around the bottom. 20 minute ride out of the woods, 4 hrs to get to the hospital, 4 stitches in my the nail bed. And a "Good luck with that!" from the doctor... :(

I just ordered the Acerbis Multiplo Touring guards. Great protection, and for 25 bucks you can replace the whole cover with any one of 3 different sizes.

When it comes to your safety SPEND THE EXTRA COUPLE BUCKS AND GET THE GOOD STUFF!!!!!!! :D

Before anyone asks, The bike came out of it all pretty good! I guess we're blood brothers now, we swapped his radiator fluid & my blood. Only about half a cup of each  , so the motor never even got hot at all. (only 60 degress that day to!)
I'm replacing the left radiator, & though it only scratched the old one a little I'm putting new white, UFO shrouds on it, & Flatland radiator guards (almost twice as thick as some others). The bike landed on top me! chipped my knee cap after it cracked the guards I was wearing, & my ankle is the size of a grapefruit. Other than the shrouds & radiator the bike's still like brand new! :D :D :D
